That's how it should be, although you have to know some facts before you can make a judgement.

Helping my eldest with her homework on Hiroshima it struck me that she was expected to look at some with a more critical eye than others.

Yes, but just blindly learning stuff doesn't really help. History is such a huge subject that teaching should be geared towards teaching kids how to appreciate and enjoy it, then they can find stuff out for themselves. For that it doesn't really matter if you are studying the nazis or victorian underpant design.

Hiroshima is an interesting one, I went there a few years back, very upsetting.

I didn't mean to sound damning of anyones views but I do believe that a 5 million exaggeration of the Holocaust should be questioned. I have looked into this quite alot and believe that the 600,000 - 1,000,000 number is the true account.

It could well be that the number of jews killed in concentration camps is not around the 6 million mark. I believe that even the leading Jewish organisations have admitted such. Still, even IF it were 'just' 100.000 people, it doesn't detract from the horrific actions and mindset at the time. Those actions by the Nazi regime as well as all the other antisemites around Europe and the rest of world (who tend to be forgotten) have rightfully been condemned.

I'd agree with you that a lot of genocides have by-and-large gone under the radar during recent times when they shouldn't have, but that doesn't mean we should forget or ignore the holocaust.

Saying that the Jews brought on the holocaust themselves for their own benefit is just despiccable though.

I was just saying that I don't think kids need to go to a Holocaust museum when in my opinion there are more recent and relevant genocides that deserve our attention nowadays if we are going to teach our kids about this kind of thing.

I think the reason why the Holocaust is so remembered is because it was committed by sophisticated and educated European people, largely for profit and driven by a hatred that had been festering in Europe for centuries. It's something we all should learn from, especially given that Muslims are treated by some today as the Jews were at the beginning of the last century. Antisemitism is clearly very much alive and kicking across Europe, but Islamophobia has reared its ugly head in recent years and should be stamped on with the same determination if we are to learn the lessons of the past.

One of the reasons that the Holocaust and Nazi Germany are good to study is because they are contentious, and that you can see both sides in the argument. Also, the fact that one of those sides is easily refutable and can then be broadened into a study of anti-semitism is also a plus point. There are a couple of lecturers who specialise in this at Leicester Uni (or there were), and its a fascinating area of research. You don't need to scratch very hard to get to the rather unpleasant underbelly of the deniers in most cases.

Yeah, its so well documented and proven that disagreeing with it is more than a little retarded. I mean, I've only touched on the area as most of my research is into medieval crap, but the sheer amount of evidence is overwhelming. not more harmful, but smoking cannabis doesn't do that much more damage to your brain than drinking excessive amounts of tea/coffee on a regular basis (6-7 mugs a day - i think) and does a lot less damage than smoking cigarettes and drinking.

Forgive me if I'm wrong, I don't know a lot about drugs but surely spliffs/joints/whatever they're called are made with tobacco as well and seeing as they don't have filter tips they are surely just as harmful as cigarettes.

True. Marijuananana is only not harmful if you don't smoke it. It is a plant that can be digested like any food or drink. Eat it like spinach or have a cup of green tea That way it's healthy. Don't drive or use heavy machinery though
