Zingari Posted 11 December 2009 Posted 11 December 2009 Don't get me wrong, I don't think scientology is the greatest evil of all time. If you consider Al'Qaeda or the Ku Klux Klan cults then I'm sure nobody would argue that both have done things that make the CoS seem really rather trivial. The only reason I get distinctly up in arms about Scientology is that a massive, massive majority of people are well aware of the evils of the above mentioned but generally tend to see Scientology either as "that quirky celebrity trend" or as a playfully silly set of religious beliefs. I don't sit in my house with the windows barricaded and the doors locked worried that John Travolta and Tom Cruise are going to come and eat my brains and to be honest I consider it highly likely scientology will probably have about dick all effect on my actual life. I just think it should generally be regarded with contempt and suspicion more than quaint amusement and for the sakes of those that do get caught up in it people should be a little more educated on the matter. I really believe what you are saying , but my main point is that most of the idiots that get involved in this crap choose to do so voluntarily ( and will probably tire of it soon enough ) and there is not the great social pressures on the individuals to remain linked to them , unlike religion where ( in some societies )you are indoctrinated at an age where you would be highly unlikely or able to shake off the shackles and the person then becomes part of the problem and unable to view their own stupidity objectively . Many misguided souls have joined modern quasi-religious organisations and realised a few years later what twats they had been , but no lasting harm was really done ( I accept this is not always the case ) As I said before , we are in danger of becoming "frogs in a pot" and accepting by degrees the whole essence of a new mainstream religious dogma that I thought had been ridiculed to extinction a few generations ago . all the best in your crusade against them anyway ,but i'll probably sit this one out
Bellend Sebastian Posted 11 December 2009 Posted 11 December 2009 Well Katie Holmes is married to the head nutjob so maybe I'm aiming a bit high. You have to start on Kirstie Alley or Priscilla Presley and work up from there. I reckon I could get as high up the list as Juliette Lewis
Webbo Posted 11 December 2009 Posted 11 December 2009 It seems to me that humans need something to believe in. Whether it's a traditional religion, a new age religion like scientology or environmentalism or some kind of political system like socialism/communism or nationalism. On the whole ( while doubting the existence of god ) I think the christian way of life is the best way to live but if I'd of been born and raised in a Muslim/Hindu/Jewish country I'd probably think that way was best instead. There are shades of opinion in every belief system. We shouldn't blanketly condemn individuals for their beliefs but for their actions. I know that's not very articulate but you get the jist.

The Doctor Posted 11 December 2009 Posted 11 December 2009 Just because they believe "that a human is an immortal alien spiritual being, termed a thetan, that is trapped on planet Earth in a physical body" and that "the thetan has had innumerable past lives and it is accepted in Scientology that lives preceding the thetan's arrival on Earth lived in extraterrestrial cultures" shouldn't mean they are ignorant in any way or form. I'm not sure if your being sarcastic or not but christians believe that an OAP created the universe and is now sat on a cloud riding a harley and watching the earth so how in anyway is that less ignorant than the scientologists? I quite fancy some garlic bread So do I!! Garlic bread is amazing. I've just eaten an entire loaf with some lasagne and chips. Unfortunately there were no onion rings.
