probably costs "you" about 0.000001p a month

That's not the point, is it really necessary?

There is huge debate in the linguistic community about whether Scots is a dialect of English or a separate language entirely, so from that point of view if a government is representing the needs of some of the people it serves (in this case, native speakers of Scots/Scots English) then yes, it probably is necessary.

Spot on. And, as Flynny says, the realistic cost to the public is pretty minimal if there at all to be honest.

It seems to me to be divisive, creating artificial barriers between people and, just to be pedantic, at Flynnys estimated cost per person it would only cost the country around £70 a year and I'm sure it costs more than that.

dunno why , but this reminds me of when i was on holiday in greece a few years ago and was talking to this bloke at the bar and he was banging on about how the brits just spoke english when abroad , not attempts at the local language ,

later at the bar he was talking to the waiters in what sounded like greek ,, but as i got closer i found out he was talking in english but with a strong greek accent and talking english the way they did , and he really believed they were impressed :giggle:

Plenty of, what are basically dialects, have some sort of official recognition around the world as languages.

I'm not saying it's vital or essential for society to function but I don't really see that there's a massive amount of harm to be had in it, either.

You've got to be pretty bored and massively sad for this to be top of your pile of things to have a cry about.

Just because I started a thread about something doesn't mean I'm losing sleep about it, I just thought it was a load of boll0x and maybe that it would make a good subject for discussion. I appreciate that it's not as important as what somebody wrote on facebook or Gordon Ramsey pretending to have a fight on US TV but I thought it was interesting.

It is in Scot's English. What's the problem? If you cannot understand it then you cannot speak English. If it widens Democracy then so much the better. :D

The basic layman's definition of a language is a collection of mutually intelligible dialects. I'd bet a fair whack that most of us would struggle to understand broad speakers of the Scots dialect, so therefore are they speaking a different language to us? Plus there are loads of boring grammatical variations, a different lexicon etc. that make it more than just "English with a funny accent".

I can understand it that's the point. How this widens democracy I don't understand.

If there was a bunch of English nationalists insisting that all official documents were produced in ancient anglo saxon then the people on here defending this nonsense would ridicule them and quite rightly call them racists.

Like I've said earlier it's boll0x.
