davieG Posted 17 February 2010 Posted 17 February 2010 A shame it couldn't be made to work I have some happy pre-match memories in there but if that's the case pulling it down is probably for the best. At least the embarrassment of having a Pub called Pride of Leicester looking like a total shit heap will be gone. From the Merc A slice of Leicester's history is being demolished to make way for a car park. Work began yesterday to knock down the 102-year-old Pride of Leicester, in Aylestone Road. It was bought by managers at Leicester's hospitals nearly five years ago for £250,000. Since then it has been empty. In spring, Leicester Chamber of Commerce urged the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust to either knock down the pub or give it a lick of paint. Dermot Breen, chairman of the chamber, said the pub was becoming an eyesore at the gateway to the city centre. It is now being knocked down as part of plans to increase car parking at Leicester Royal Infirmary. Once the site has been flattened, it will be used as a car park for contractors working at the hospital. This is in turn will free up more spaces for patients and visitors. Pulling down the pub is one of a raft of measures drawn up to ease traffic congestion and create more parking spaces at the city centre hospital. Managers are hoping to rent spaces for staff and hospital visitors in a new multi-storey car park being built nearby at the Leicester Tigers ground. Hospital bosses are also considering building their own multi-storey car park on the hospital site. Andy Powell, head of facilities at Leicester Royal Infirmary, said: "The area created by removing the pub will be used to relocate storage units so that we can add public car park spaces near to the entrance of Windsor building." The hours of the Hopper bus, which runs between the infirmary, Glenfield Hospital and Leicester General Hospital, have also been extended to help ease congestion.
Lillehamring Posted 17 February 2010 Posted 17 February 2010 urgh, so more history is destroyed for a quick fix... shame they couldn't just wait a bit longer for the multistorey to go up... what is most frustrating about this, is the fact that rather than solve the problem of congestion and parking by improving public transport, they just build more carparks, which in turn encourages more car traffic. i blame ultra.

Therre's not much choice when it's all going to be hospital spaces. The pub has been closed down for years, the only time I can remember it being full was back in the days when it was the Firkin and Physio?
hairy Posted 17 February 2010 Posted 17 February 2010 Used to go in there years ago. Think it was called the Freeman's Arms

I get the feeling that's gonna be a common phrase on here in the not too distant future
Lillehamring Posted 17 February 2010 Posted 17 February 2010 I get the feeling that's gonna be a common phrase on here in the not too distant future well it's always been the case, only now he can officially be used as a scapegoat for everything wrong with leicester.
Webbo Posted 17 February 2010 Posted 17 February 2010 Used to go in there years ago. Think it was called the Freeman's Arms It was, it was a dump then as well.
Thracian Posted 17 February 2010 Posted 17 February 2010 The only time I can remember it being full was back in the days when it was the Firkin and Physio? I thought Firkin & Physio was the name of the pub not the entertainment they were laying on to fill the place! Mind you, having known one or two physios...
Guest Bilo Posted 17 February 2010 Posted 17 February 2010 Sad to see an old pub being demolished but it had become something of an eyesore and an embarrassment given the unfortunate name. I'm more disappointed that nobody wanted to buy the place and reopen it than it being turned into a car park.

jonthefox Posted 17 February 2010 Posted 17 February 2010 It used to be a cosy little place for gigs in its day. Soon, there will be feck all of leicester drinking history left.

We need to tell Colin (Ultra) to sort his city out. Else we'll all vote Conservative, and set up a lynchmob.
