marbelladave Posted 18 June 2010 Posted 18 June 2010 France could be considered as a good team, and they often loose when they play poorly. Anyway. England to win 2-1 France have some excellent players but they have not been a good team for quite some time. Just like England really... On a totally different matter... There has been considerable speculation that Defoe could start tonights game. Given that Heskey was one of our better players against the US and that Rooney's performance was generally considered to be complete bobbins, can we expect to see the Heskey / Defoe partnership starting tonight? Actually that's not a bad idea......
DJ Barry Hammond Posted 18 June 2010 Posted 18 June 2010 James to start If Capello does go with James, lets hope he (as in James) doesn't make a howler, because that would effectively leave ourselves with one keeper! Sometimes the press do us no favours what so ever, I expect part of the reason for Fabio not announcing his side earlier is because he knows the press would leak it and the oppposition have time to prepare and make plans.
leicesterfox86 Posted 18 June 2010 Posted 18 June 2010 France have some excellent players but they have not been a good team for quite some time. Just like England really... Yes good team on paper, but that's it. England have a good team: their first match was not good, but the first round is always a kind of trial.
MikeyT Posted 18 June 2010 Posted 18 June 2010 Hopefully a great performance by us and a few goals as well. 3-0 win to England.
hairy Posted 18 June 2010 Posted 18 June 2010 1 - 0 to Algeria I know they are my national team and I will be cheering England on but I cant stand them
CosbehFox Posted 18 June 2010 Posted 18 June 2010 As i have said elsewhere recently, I am always concerned about performance. Sure a good team will often win when playing poorly, so often in fact that it has become a cliché but poor teams scraping a few results with mediocre performances will, eventually, be found out. That remains my main worry.I take you point about the ages of the US' players, I was just going on my 'impressions' that their better, more experienced players were somewhat past their best. Donovan's recent form excepted, I still think their 'big' players are in decline. You mention that MB but it's something Greece and Italy did in 2004 and 2006 respectively early on in the tournament.
marbelladave Posted 18 June 2010 Posted 18 June 2010 Yes good team on paper, but that's it. England have a good team: their first match was not good, but the first round is always a kind of trial. Hope you are correct... Still worried though.....
marbelladave Posted 18 June 2010 Posted 18 June 2010 You mention that MB but it's something Greece and Italy did in 2004 and 2006 respectively early on in the tournament. True, more or less...<_< Arguably Greece played well within their (very) limited capabilities and intentions. Italy are just perverse, if the country did not exist the universe would be a very different place. (or cease to exist entirely) It also rather depends on how far away 'eventually' is, I guess I was thinking a bit longer term than the half a dozen or so consecutive games needed to win a tournament... Woolly thinking, sorry. (see, I really am fretting on this game)
CosbehFox Posted 18 June 2010 Posted 18 June 2010 It also rather depends on how far away 'eventually' is, I guess I was thinking a bit longer term than the half a dozen or so consecutive games needed to win a tournament... Thing (to the majority) is that the longer term doesn't matter at international level. For the records at least (there's no doubt to build a 'classic team', it constantly evolves and evolves over the years like the Dutch in the 70s)....you only have to look at the England Rugger Union team for that. Downright dreadful for periods but won a World Cup and followed it up with a runners-up spot four years later.

I am watching Germany slowly starting to take control of the game against Serbia. Referee is a bit of a tosser, any tackle that results in a player going down is a yellow card. Germans are not exactly fighting to stay on their feet.
purpleronnie Posted 18 June 2010 Posted 18 June 2010 I find it strange james starts. I just think the chances of green messing up again for the 2nd match on the bounce is so small, but the odds that calamity james makes an equally stupid error are higher. But lets hope the england goalie wont have anything to do.
