Sousa - Quality not Quantity

From OS

New Foxes boss, Paulo Sousa, has been quick to get to grips with pre-season whilst he gets to know his new players, as the vigorous preparations for the season continue.

The former Portugal International enjoyed a memorable career as a player, but many City supporters will be surprised to know that his coaching CV spans much further than just 2 seasons in the Championship. The young manager gained a wealth of experience from travelling the world learning from and coaching alongside some of the biggest names in World Football.

Sousa spoke to LCFC.com about how he came to the decision of becoming a manager after such a glittering career:

"I started from youth, I have been around Holland, France and Portugal, I know it very well. This gives me different points of views to work with.

I have worked with Scolari in the Portuguese national team in 2004 and 2006. After this I took the decision to manage a club, it's completely different to a national team. I was very happy with that decision and I want to achieve what I did as a player, as a manager."

Sousa acknowledged the impact his own coaches and managers had made on him during his time as a player, but stressed that he wants to be his own man:

In my career I have worked with some fantastic managers, I can remember everything I have experienced with them all, but when I made the decision to be a manager, I took everything I learned, but want to be myself, with my own ideas. I believe in everything I do."

City's season gets underway on August 7 against Crystal Palace, and the manager admits it is a tough opening month for the Foxes, but is sure the team can get off to a positive start with the help of everyone associated with the club:

"We don't have an easy start, but I believe we will start it well. I want to walk through the tunnel and win together. It's not just my staff, my players, it's the fans as well. The fans have an important part to play in the winning process, this is something I want to install everyday with everyone, it's only with a winning mentality we can achieve what we want to."

The manager went on to acknowledge the role of his predecessor Nigel Pearson, but stressed that the club must now look to the future and show the ambition to move forward:

"I have taken over from a successful manager in Nigel, I found myself in a similar position when I took over at Swansea. It always takes a little bit of time to adapt, but in the end we will get what we want together and that is the only way we will achieve."

It makes me proud to know that we will have a massive support, the fans have a vital task to support us, to help us.

From my point of view, I will make sure the players are enthusiastic, confident and realistic. This club can progress and join the Premier League."

He was also quick to express his desire to ensure that the ability is there within the squad from day one as he continues to evaluate the current City squad:

I believe in quality not quantity. The players found it a surprise to be doing ball work at this early stage, but I enjoyed what I saw, it's a way for me to understand the players and make better decisions for me and the squad.

My first step as a manager is to help the players to develop; sometimes this might mean going somewhere else to get more football, to enjoy playing football, to get the right confidence to develop.

After that they can have an important part in our squad. These first days it's important for me to understand that."

And with the season now only weeks away, what can City supporters expect from Paulo Sousa's Foxes?

"You can expect my players to have a lot of ambition, a winning mentality, everywhere I go I expect to win games, this is what the fans can expect of me and my players."

Yeah I thought it looked like a diamond, a formation I personally like.

i've heard from a man in a pub that Sousa will be playing a very forward attacking style of football and that is in fact the new 2-1-3-4 formation.

so he's been around Europe to study different training techniques and styles at some of the biggest clubs, two words Tony Adams.. he took the same route and he's a shite manager let hope Sousa didn't go to the same places

Why the hell are people picking preferred line-ups in the middle of bloody July??? :S

Makes you wonder - they'd be more productive picking their noses and nearer to getting it right..
