unreachable Posted 18 August 2010 Posted 18 August 2010 Why would the club owners choose a name that is not a commercially driven decision? If they did there would be cause for complaint at their commercial incompetence. "King Power" is fine. I couldn't care less what they call the ground.
Houdini Logic Posted 18 August 2010 Posted 18 August 2010 Are you all sure Filbert Way is made up?! From the Club - The Walkers Stadium Leicester City Football Club Filbert Way, Leicester, LE2 7FL
stripeyfox Posted 18 August 2010 Posted 18 August 2010 Are you all sure Filbert Way is made up?! From the Club - The Walkers Stadium Leicester City Football Club Filbert Way, Leicester, LE2 7FL I don't think the road was called Filbert Way prior to the stadium being built. So it was "made up", albeit by the council around the same time.
Lillehamring Posted 18 August 2010 Posted 18 August 2010 After December presumably means starting 2011, the new calendar year, they would have to buy Walkers out of their contract, and yea if it runs until 2017 I imagine it will be a large figure!! probably no more than it would cost to buy the naming rights which they will, of course, get for free... regarding the name - king power stadium, is ok, as other's have said we could have had some awful company take us over, at least king power is a bit more butch than 'walkers', it's also a lot less like 'wankers', which will piss on many away support bonfires. i suggest we go aussie on it and refer to it as ' The KPS'.... anything is better than the Ultra only habit of calling it 'The Way'...
Houdini Logic Posted 18 August 2010 Posted 18 August 2010 I don't think the road was called Filbert Way prior to the stadium being built. So it was "made up", albeit by the council around the same time. Aaaah get ya I thought people meant 'its made up - it's not really called that'
stripeyfox Posted 18 August 2010 Posted 18 August 2010 I seem to remember Walkers paid £150,000 per year for ten years initially. This was later extended but I don't know what the revised amount was.
CKB Posted 18 August 2010 Posted 18 August 2010 I think we should call it the... The King Power, Freeman's Wharf, Filbert Way, Raw Dykes, Walkers (add other name here) Stadium
Jacnah Posted 18 August 2010 Posted 18 August 2010 I actually hope this happens. I can't stand the amount of people who refer to our ground as "The Walkers", hopefully it will lead to people calling it Filbert Way. spot on:
haraven Posted 18 August 2010 Posted 18 August 2010 King Power sounds like the name a porn actor would choose to get some flash over his pump action daily chores.
Alexikokopops Posted 18 August 2010 Posted 18 August 2010 Might be wrong (probably am), but wasn't Filbert Street's official name City Stadium? Yep. Just like West Ham's stadium is the Boleyn Ground but everyone calls it Upton Park. Aaaah get ya I thought people meant 'its made up - it's not really called that' Yeah, they had a vote on what to call it I think. I seem to remember names like "Lineker Road".
unreachable Posted 18 August 2010 Posted 18 August 2010 According to the Bangkok Post (our new source of information in succession to the Leicester Mercury!) the Walker Stadium will be renamed King Power Stadium in December after the contract with a sponsor expires. http://www.bangkokpost.com/news/sports/191748/new-owner-eyes-promotion

davieG Posted 18 August 2010 Posted 18 August 2010 Might be wrong (probably am), but wasn't Filbert Street's official name City Stadium? That was fairly late in it's life around the Pierpoint time probably wanted to make it sound big and less parochial.
Edmund Posted 18 August 2010 Posted 18 August 2010 That was fairly late in it's life around the Pierpoint time probably wanted to make it sound big and less parochial. Pierpoint out!!!

unreachable Posted 18 August 2010 Posted 18 August 2010 Err that's what this topic is all about The link in the first post merely said that there would be a change "after December". Following posts queried the length of contract with Walkers and if Walkers would have to be bought off in similar fashion to Upton Steel. I thought the Bangkok Post link was relevant since it made clear that the Walkers contract was coming to an end in December. Care to reconsider your impolite challenge?

I thought the Bangkok Post link was relevant since it made clear that the Walkers contract was coming to an end in December. Care to reconsider your impolite challenge? The Walkers contract will only be coming to an end if these people buy it out as it's due to run until 2017 so I hardly think that clarified anything, besides what was impolite about my post I was merely questioning the value of the information you provided, I still stand by that.
Zingari Posted 19 August 2010 Posted 19 August 2010 they may come to a compromise and call it the Power Walking Stadium

Correctomondo. Today's Mercury also states that it "could" be changed, there is nothing set in stone yet. Today's Merc
Ultra Posted 19 August 2010 Posted 19 August 2010 Thai sources seemed quite confident about the change - probably because they'd spoken to Vichai and Top. The Mercury spoke to Walkers, though, who seemed unaware of any proposed change.
Guest Mee-9 Posted 19 August 2010 Posted 19 August 2010 Filbert Way. Has to be. fook off sponsorship deals. I want something traditional, Not the King Power Stadium. Walkers Stadium is okay, but I'm used to that now. Fosse Way? Weller's Way? Trying to think of different suggestions.
Rincewind Posted 20 August 2010 Posted 20 August 2010 Not sure about Raw Dykes. There may be different meanings attached to it. Think they want more money off Walkers if their name stays. Will they be able to match the figure wanted?
Leicester_Loyal Posted 20 August 2010 Posted 20 August 2010 Think they want more money off Walkers if their name stays. Will they be able to match the figure wanted? Doubt they will.
silver80 Posted 20 August 2010 Posted 20 August 2010 Ha! I wasn't suggesting it just saying for there to be any chance of people calling it Filbert Way. KP - going from Crisp to Nuts If this don't temp Walkers to put more money in, Then nothing will. A proper kick in the teeth.
