Rio Ferdinand banned for speeding

Manchester United footballer Rio Ferdinand has been banned from driving for 28 days after he was caught overtaking a police car at 105mph.

The England international, who admitted speeding, drove past the patrol car on the M6 in Staffordshire on 9 January.

Ferdinand, 26, of Alderley Edge, Cheshire, was also fined £1,500 by magistrates in Newcastle-under-Lyme.

The defender, who was not in court, was criticised by the chairman of the bench for failing to set a good example.

'Role model'

It is Ferdinand's fourth driving ban, following convictions for drink-driving in 1997 and speeding in 2002 and 2003.

Sentencing Ferdinand, Ashley Howells said: "This court views speeding on local highways most seriously, particularly when the speed is more than 100mph, and our view is that Mr Ferdinand must be disqualified.

"He is a role model and should be a positive role model for young people in society and this does not give out the right message."

Ferdinand, who is currently in Africa doing charity work, was also ordered to pay £35 in prosecution costs.

Earlier, prosecutor Sandie Laughlin told the court that the England star's high-powered Chrysler was tracked by police travelling at an average of 105.9mph over a distance of nearly two miles.

Anybody driving at 104mph is a tosser. There is no justification and no excuses for such a blatent disregard of the law. And the fact that this is Rio's FOURTH ban strengthens my assertion. How can anybody can condone his behaviour or play down its significance when he clearly hasn't learned his lesson?? That sort of speed is reckless and dangerous, he is a complete idiot in my opinion.

Fastest i've gone on a motorway is 90mph...my car then struggles :rolleyes: (Although thats probably due to my driving - Example; I had my car in November...I've thrashed the clutch already :unsure:lol) Fastest i've done on normal road 80mph, However after seeing my mate crash infront of me 2 weeks ago has made me grow up alot!

My mate passed his test 3 wednesdays ago, 2 mondays ago we were going to McDonalds at lunch, we had mates in the car from our college course, he took his car, I took mine, he hit a rock on a dual carraigeway went out of control, back end of the car flew out hit the curb - Wrote off his car :nono: luckly there was only the driver and one passenger in the car if there was anyone in the back they'd have been fuked! Luckly there was a tree which the car hit, if the tree wasn't there the car would have been at the bottom of a ditch and most probably have rolled the car and be upside down. Called the police/fire/ambulance, they both got took of to hospital, nothing hurt just shock/bad cuts (When he got out the car - blood was everywhere) anywya the driver of the car keeps having blackouts now.

-I know what everyones thinking because everyone I have spoke to have accused me and him of it so i'm just gonna say - We were NOT racing! The police have found out when he hit either the rock or the curb his tire blew out causing him to go out of control. Anyway, It might sound harsh and I wish it didn't happen this way but something like this was the "wake-up" I needed...

How much do you want to bet?

I have never driven at 100mph, and that is after 5 years of driving. The closest I have ever come to that was 90mph which was at 2am in the morning a few years ago, and nowadays I rarely go above 75mph.
