Leicester City academy manager Jon Rudkin has praised Sven-Goran Eriksson and his first-team players for helping develop the club's young professionals.

Rudkin said several of his promising academy side have been allowed to train with the first-team squad, and he said the City boss was keen to encourage the young players.

Rudkin also revealed senior players such as Steve Howard and Matt Oakley were taking time to offer advice to the players just starting out in their careers.

Rudkin's under-18 side are enjoying another excellent season and sit top of their league having scored 43 goals in 13 games, the highest ratio in the country.

"There has been a number of lads who have been able to get a taste of first-team training, through Chris Powell, Derek Fazackerley and Sven," Rudkin said.

"The knowledge and experience Sven has as a manager is immense and he passes it on to the young players. That is really encouraging and good to see in a football club.

"We also have some really good professionals at the club. Andy King came through the academy, but we also have some great professionals like Steve Howard and Matt Oakley, and new lads, such as Martyn Waghorn, Chris Weale and Curtis Davies, who are good around the young players.''

Rudkin says he has enjoyed watching his side develop, but said the results were not the most important thing.

"Each weekend I am able to watch the age groups from under-nines all the way through to the youth teams,'' he said.

"To see some of the good work going on throughout the club from the coaches, and to witness some of the young players playing against the academies, is really rewarding to see.''

good to see, as much as we all like seeing stars brought in, there is nothing better then "1 of our own" making it, which is why Andy King's rise to the key role he no has has been so enjoyable, hopfully Sven will spot 1 or 2 more from the current crop he has faith in

A shrewd move by Sven as ultimately it's a win win situation for us. At best we find a talented young player who can contribute to the first team. Worst case scenario and they're not good enough in training to be included then we haven't lost anything just by looking at them train in a first team environment.

The Academy will flourish....

Wonder if Sven is trying to get a new reserve league going so he can let players gradually take place in the1st team.

And that was last updated 3rd October.....

Original article did actually say 43 goals in 13 matches. Concentrate.

Geez sorry. You would have thought the Premier league website would be updated a bit more ....

Current Table for the U18's

Up to the game before. Eight points clear after 12 games, possibly more after saturday, averaging over 3 goals a game. Pretty awesome record.

It's phenomenal that our academy has pretty much steam rolled their region for the past 3-4 seasons and yet the only successes to come out of it have been Andy King and Max Gradel to a certain extent. Other teams who aren't as dominant seem to reel off better youngsters to make the step up to first team level. Why is this? Surely if your youth team is destroying other youth teams, that counts for something in the quality of those players and it's not as if it's anything to do with size. I've looked at our academy over the years and we aren't an especially brutal and physical team, we're fast, incisive and skillful. Beaglehole and Rudkin have done an astounding job here and they must be baffled at the lack of their players that have been given the chance to make it.

I haven't seen anything of the current lot since I moved to London, but from what I gather Schlupp, Parkes and John really have a lot of talent, as does Chamberlain but it's now going to be harder than ever to breakthrough with Sven being capable of recruiting quality proven players. One thing though that is encouraging is that Sven has always given youngsters a chance, he did it at Man City with Michael Johnson, Kelvin Etuhu, Daniel Sturridge and Kasper Schmeical. He liked to bring in youngsters for England too as soon as it was possible, so I hope he follows the same policy here.

There's nothing better for a fan than seeing one of your homegrown lads prospering. That's why I love Andy King, even if he's not born in Leicester, you can tell he loves the club because he's made it here. It would be nice to get a striker come through who could cut it and my money is on Schlupp, the German rasta.

svens not daft, if he doesnt quite get all players in that hes after he can call up some of the talent as needed if we have injury problems. train them with the 1st team, build up an understanding between the players so they can settle more if called upon.
