Whilst watching the ashes, the following question occured to me.

The average bowl seems to be around 85 mph, the pitch is 22 yards long, how long does a batsmen have (from the ball leaving the bowlers hand to striking the bat) to pick his shot?

Any of you clever people work this out?

Assuming the ball travels 22 yards it would be 0.52 seconds. But the ball will probably travel slightly further given the angle at which it is thrown.

But then assuming the Batsman comes forward slightly into the shot then he's chopping a little distance again.

Ultimately it's all pedantry, mind, because "about half a second" is fairly accurate enough and still highlights how impressive it really is - and that from someone that loathes cricket.

i make it approx 0.52 secs

85mph = 127.7 ft/sec and divide 66 by this

i could easily be wrong though :)

edit

just seen the earlier answers but i'm showing the working out :blush:

Loathing cricket just means you haven't experienced it properly.

Nonsense. It just means you like your sport to have some action. :thumbup:

I have a short attention span.

Apparently, and to match the 1/2 a second suggested answer, it's about the same time as a tennis player on the opposite end of an Andy Roddick fastest serve.
