AoWW Posted 30 January 2011 Posted 30 January 2011 Never had a problem with my car stereo (factory fitted system, radio & single CD on a Peugeot 206CC 2.0l) until the last week or so. I've noticed that I now lose my radio reception after travelling for about 25-30 mins. (And, no, it's not always on the same journey and that it's just gone out of range!) I can have a perfect signal, then it goes 'staticy' for a minute or so, then it loses all stations and starts to auto-search which picks up nothing but static. It seems to do this both with FM and AM. If the car is then left overnight, for example, I'll have perfect radio reception again when I turn on the next day - but, again, it fades after 25-30 mins. Turning the radio off and on again doesn't simply cure the problem though. The same thing happens even if I'm listening to a CD - I can flip over to the radio after 20 mins and it's fine... go back to CD and flip back to radio again 10 mins later and it's lost all reception. I can't imagine what could cause this sort of fault. Faulty unit, something getting hot and needing time to cool down, a lose antenna (but why then always work lose after a similar length of time?).....??? Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Reluctant to take it to a Peugeot dealer and get fobbed off and ripped off. Might try my local ICE specialists soon.
davieG Posted 30 January 2011 Posted 30 January 2011 Does sound like something's getting too hot or you have a loose connection which again might only show up when it's warmed up.
Smudge Posted 30 January 2011 Posted 30 January 2011 I would guess that the radio needs replacing. It sounds like something "overheats" after a period of time and only after 'resting' does it recover. I thought it might just be the antenna but you'd have poor reception intermittantly if that was the case. A decent specialist car audio store could bench test it for you,
Zingari Posted 30 January 2011 Posted 30 January 2011 have you tried bending the metal coat hanger into a different shape ?
AoWW Posted 30 January 2011 Author Posted 30 January 2011 Thanks for the helpful (and not so helpful!) suggestions. Yep, the overheating seems the most likely explanation. I'll take it to a specialist and get them to have a look.

AoWW Posted 30 January 2011 Author Posted 30 January 2011 Do your lights dip or you lose any power? Not that I've noticed.
cambridgefox Posted 30 January 2011 Posted 30 January 2011 Not that I've noticed. could be the alternator,if that has gone,it drains the battery. You wont break down,it will just save energy where not needed.Im not a mechanic though, just like the manly calenders
ozleicester Posted 31 January 2011 Posted 31 January 2011 Do not drive for more than 20 minutes at any time. Fixed
ACF Posted 1 February 2011 Posted 1 February 2011 Listen to your iPod? Best thing to do would be to take it to a specialist, not the garage that will charge you a squillion for a plastic part.
