You would think that F1 teams would be unhappy with their drivers doing stuff like this for these reasons.

Terrible shame as he is a good up-coming driver. Hope he makes a quick recovery.

Kubica injured in Rally

Formula 1 driver Robert Kubica 'injured' in rally

Formula 1 star Robert Kubica has suffered "serious injuries" while taking part in a rally in Italy, an official news agency has reported.

According to reports, the 26-year-old Pole crashed into a wall and was air-lifted to a nearby hospital.

A spokeswoman for his British-based Renault team told Reuters the driver was conscious and a statement would be issued shortly.

He has been preparing for a new Formula 1 season which starts on 13 March.

Kubica regularly competes in rallies and was driving on Sunday a week after testing the new Lotus-backed Renault in Valencia ahead of the opening Formula 1 race in Bahrain.

He was an impressive performer last season to finish in eighth position in the drivers' table, securing second at Melbourne and a third in Monaco and Belgium.

A bigger motorsport fan might be able to correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure he rallys in a Renault car in Renault colours, I'm sure they're aware.

It's not like he tied meat on his body and went swimming with sharks, Rally might appear to be a more dangerous sport than F1 but you can pick up freak accidents in either. If Rally was so dangerous you EXPECT injuries then it wouldn't be a major form of motorsport.

He could just as well have fallen down the stairs in his house and broken his leg.

Edit: Here we go.

At the end of the day, it promotes their brand and it gives their driver some good experience and keeps him on his toes, competitively, during the off season.

Just got a text saying he's got a 'broken femur, internal bleeding and broken hand which is under operation and may need amputation.'

He is not going to have his hand amputated. His surgery has just finished. His hand is ok but in week time we will know if his hand will be back to normal. They thought his hand was in worse condition than his leg but looks like it is other way round and his leg isn't very well. Robert is going to get his hand working properly in at least year but he's the guy who suffered in many car crashes and hopefully this one will not be different. His pilot is ok and he sends some positive news as noone else actually wants to let us know about roberts condition. If u need some more news I can try to get some more as I'm polish and we are sort of full of news. Unfortunately, not all of them are true.

Glad he's not going to have his hand amputated! I heard it will take a year for him to fully recover. And I didn't know he had titanium bolts in his arm already due to another accident he suffered earlier in his life.

His had his arm and hand operated in 2003. The good thing is that he was operated by the same guy who was doing the surgery today as well. If he still wants to drive in f1 he needs to get his hand working in 100%. This fella is not gonna give up just like that. :)

Think positive guys.
