Grayson subject of Villa gamble

Leeds United boss Simon Grayson is the subject of a huge gamble to become the new manager of Aston Villa.

Grayson, who made almost 50 appearances for the Villans between 1997 and 1999, has seen his odds slashed from 25/1 to just 5/2 with SkyBet to take over in the Villa hot-seat.

The Leeds manager won promotion back into the Championship in 2009-10 and guided the Whites to a seventh-placed finish last season and after a sustained flurry of money on Saturday, the 41-year-old is now one of the favourites for the job.

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez has already turned down the chance to succeed Gerard Houllier at Villa Park in a repayment of loyalty to the Latics.

And former England boss Steve McClaren, another manager on the short-list, has also snubbed a return to English football with the Midlands club.

Sky Bet football trader Joe Petyt said: "Grayson seems like an unlikely choice for Villa but he fits the 'young and aspirational' criteria that they're looking for having done well at both Blackpool and Leeds.

"Ken Bates would be reluctant to let his man leave but the lure of the Premier League could prove too good for Grayson to turn down."

Might be Grayson's best chance of premier league managing. Leeds are going to lose a few players and they won't have the momentum of promotion next season either.

He should snap their hands off.

Be a massive move for him going from a play-off chasing championship team to a premiership team with decent backing and european ambitions.
