Sven magic formation?

Was looking at the current squad and with potential transfers (Every player who plays football lol) and im trying to work out what formation Sven might be going with? With all the strikers were after we must surely be playing with 2 at top, cant imagine signing some of the strikers were linked to and have them on the bench by playing 1 up front! weve just signed Danns so i think we must be playing with an attacking midfielder. Not linked with many wingers so i think we could be playing a 4-4-2 formation but having a diamond shape in midfield!?

Flat 4-4-2 he has even stated is his desire for this season.

Which I'm happy with, fvck people saying it's old-school and dated, it's a sensible formation if you've got the players to play it, think it's pretty low-risk.

Yeh prefer 4-4-2. basic and balanced. i know sven liked his wingers aswell. i know what ever formation it is we will be the most attacking team in the championship.

Has he?

after the 4-5-1 fad of the past few years, I think football is moving to 4-3-3, it's extremely flexible and with good, intelligent, fast players becomes 4-5-1 as soon as the opposition have the ball

A fair point but all in all I feel when it's supposed to be 3 up front, you often see just a lone striker, even on the ball.

And I'm pretty sure Sven said it somewhere in an interview.

I thought 4-5-1 but if we bring in Mackail smith, maynard, nugent they are not all going to want to sit on the bench. We have to many midfielders in our squad to play 3 aswell.

Wouldnt mind just stickign to what we did last season. We created a shit load of chances and just needed a bit of fortune and a decent striker to convert them

this would be king/ Danns attacking, Abe/ wellens holding. i think our midfield will be tighter and have Peltier and Masilela being more attacking. There both attacking defenders and have great pace.

4-3-3 if done well, I feel is more effective and a lot more attractive. I'm a sucker for some good looking football. (Swansea, us at times).

4-4-2 seems to be the easier to master though.

I would imagine his strategy is to have options to play various formations for specific opposition or to change a game approach if he chooses to and to have cover for all the positions to enable that and for injuries, resting and international call ups.

He may have a preferred formation and 'first' team in mind but I'm sure or at least I hope he's not that rigid with his thoughts

i agree we need to be able to change formation, thats were city have gone wrong in the past, we stick to the same formation and get caught out by opponents because they know our game plan. But we do need a first choice formation so everybody knows what the game plan is.

who would be the middle 4 though??

We need a winger. Whitingham may be the answer :dunno: but I'd like someone with pace.

Whittingham - Danns/Abe - King - Vassell

Would be interesting to see something like in some away games. Might be too attack minded in the middle though. Still feel having King in a 2-man centre mid means one of the wingers needs to be slightly more defensive minded and tuck in more (ie. Whittingham here).

As I've stated elsewhere, everything points towards us playing 4-3-3.

I doubt Danns would have come to us if he wasn't told he'd be playing a key role here next season. King is certainly more effective in a 4-3-3, and as captain will expect to start more often than not. He has also played well in a 4-4-2, but usually that was with more of a defensive-minded player alongside him (Oakley or Wellens).

The proposed signings of Maynard and Mackail-Smith point towards a desire to get mobile, pacey forwards, with the adaptability to interchange and occupy the wide areas as well as the penalty box. With Vassell, Waghorn and Gallagher all currently on the books and equally capable of such flexibility, I'd be surprised if we didn't play 4-3-3.
