Joe. Posted 8 July 2011 Posted 8 July 2011 Last summer I'm sure I remember my uncle telling me about how in the mid-70s we had about four players in the England team in the same match? I can't find it anywhere. Just flicked through Of Fossils and Foxes and couldn't spot it in there either. Is this right? I'd love to find the team...
Webbo Posted 8 July 2011 Posted 8 July 2011 I have a vague memory of that, I think it was when Joe Mercer was caretaker. I think it was Weller, Worthington, Whitworth and somebody else I can't remember. EDIT; It might have been Shilton I'm not sure.
Zingari Posted 8 July 2011 Posted 8 July 2011 whitworth weller worthington and shilton (not sure) i think it was a friendly and joe mercer was in temporary charge sorry webbo had already posted

Nish wasn't playing for us then. There are only 3 Leicester players in those teams. I've got a feeling it was in South America somewhere.
Joe. Posted 8 July 2011 Author Posted 8 July 2011 Also just found out that only ever three Leicester boys played in the same England team at the same time. Shilton, Weller and Worthington played a few matches together, but Whitworth didn't feature for England until 1975.

Joe. Posted 8 July 2011 Author Posted 8 July 2011 it could have been jeff blockley , he was around at that time A 1972 one-cap wonder apparently. Found an old Talking Balls thread on my travels that just says three too.
Zingari Posted 8 July 2011 Posted 8 July 2011 these are the matches joe mercer was in charge , so it should be one of them my memory is playing tricks though , because i thought there was a match with 4 Leicester players , but i thought it was just a friendly 479 11 May 1974 Wales 0 England 2 [0-1] Ninian Park, Sloper Road, Cardiff BC AW 480 15 May 1974 England 1 Northern Ireland 0 [0-0] Empire Stadium, Wembley, London HW 481 18 May 1974 Scotland 2 England 0 [2-0] Hampden Park, Mount Florida, Glasgow AL 482 22 May 1974 England 2 Argentina 2 [1-0] Empire Stadium, Wembley, London Fr HD 483 29 May 1974 G.D.R. 1 England 1 [0-0] Zentralstadion, Leipzig Fr AD 484 1 June 1974 Bulgaria 0 England 1 [0-1] Stadion Vasil Levski, Sofija Fr AW 485 5 June 1974 Yugoslavia 2 England 2 [1-1] Stadion Crvena Zvezda, Beograd Fr AD

There's this game against Argentina. Perhaps one of the players was an unused sub.

Zingari Posted 8 July 2011 Posted 8 July 2011 I thought it was the game against Scotland could be http://www.londonhearts.com/scotland/games/19740518.html edit ah but nish was gone by then wasn't he ?
BNET Posted 8 July 2011 Posted 8 July 2011 could be http://www.londonhearts.com/scotland/games/19740518.html edit ah but nish was gone by then wasn't he ? It was three Weller, Wortho and Whitworth but Shilton was in goal and not too long left us, so was sort of classed as Leicester. Under Mercer it was but not sure what game.
Joe. Posted 8 July 2011 Author Posted 8 July 2011 It was three Weller, Wortho and Whitworth but Shilton was in goal and not too long left us, so was sort of classed as Leicester. Under Mercer it was but not sure what game. Nah, Mercer was manager in 1974, but Whitworth didn't feature until '75.

BNET Posted 10 July 2011 Posted 10 July 2011 Pretty sure the three W's played together for England. Weller and Wortho 100% played together under Mercer.Yep, that's the one..
BNET Posted 10 July 2011 Posted 10 July 2011 It was Shilton, Weller and Worthington. Steve Whitworth was also in the squad but did not make his England debut until the following year. Yes you are right, l always thought it was them three not Shilton. Nish was about then after he had gone to Derby, so the Leicester influence on the team was strong at the time.
Smudge Posted 11 July 2011 Posted 11 July 2011 I I'm with you, I thought there was a game with 4 of our players. There's this game against Argentina. Perhaps one of the players was an unused sub. I was at that game, On the way home my immediate boss puked all over his boss' new car. He never recovered from that career move.
Wycombe Fox Posted 11 July 2011 Posted 11 July 2011 There's this game against Argentina. Perhaps one of the players was an unused sub. I was at that game v Argentina - my Dad took me as an 11th birthday present which was actually on the day. We went crazy when Wortho scored. Happy days.
Free Falling Foxes Posted 11 July 2011 Posted 11 July 2011 I thought it was the game against Scotland Pretty sure it happened against NI The match report in the Mercury had the score as City 1 Irish 0!
OzFox Posted 11 July 2011 Posted 11 July 2011 I was at that game v Argentina - my Dad took me as an 11th birthday present which was actually on the day. We went crazy when Wortho scored. Happy days. I was there too with my older brother who lived in Wembley Park. That goal from Worthington was a bit special if I remember correctly. Also remember Mick Channon's ridiculous windmill goal celebration Seemed quite normal to see Leicester players in the England team back then. What on earth went wrong?
OzFox Posted 11 July 2011 Posted 11 July 2011 Pretty sure it happened against NI The match report in the Mercury had the score as City 1 Irish 0! Keith Weller scored the goal in that match. Worthington came on as a sub.
