Babylon Posted 14 July 2011 Posted 14 July 2011 Interesting point, and something I've been thinking for a few days player for player I do think we were stronger last season, but it's the team that counts so lets hope these guys and whoever else joins forms a better team although saying that, Nugent will play others in better than Yakubu ever could so even if he'll potentially score a few less, the team may benefit, like-wise at the back, Bamba, Vitor & Mee were all good individually & someday may be great players but as a team they didn't always click. Hopefully Mills is fit soon so he can form a pre-season partnership with SSL. and I get the feeling Danns will add a lot, our midfield generally escaped criticism last season, but there was something lacking, more noticeably when the opposition had the ball So although the players may not be an overwhelming improvement, the team could be much better On paper it's probably not much better, but half of the loans failed to really deliver last year and we discovered "on paper" means nothing. Plus, I feel like the players he's added bring a lot of what we were actually missing last year. Pace and direct running from the centre forward. No nonsense, tough, centre backs who communicate. A leader in Mills. A solid left back who can defend and not just attack. A decent keeper that doesn't let shots in from outside the box every 15 minutes. A quick, strong, hustler in midfield who can also score and boss the midfield.

I was just saying on paper it's not as strong as it was at one point: Naughton > Peltier Vitor > SSL Yakubu > Nugent for example. I'm still happy with our team now, and think it'll do better. And the fewer loans the better, imo.

Also, its a friendly. The game will be at 50% normal tempo and there will be lulls in play. You can't blame Stringer for filling the time - I thought the Nadal stuff was interesting!
