rossporterlc Posted 15 June 2005 Posted 15 June 2005 at the end of last season the signs were encouragin, yet i felt we needed a lot of quality signings if we were to push on for promotion this season, at this moment in time i cannot say i ffel canfident of our chances. how many more players does everyone think we will need to push for promotion or do you think we have a good enough sqaud already?
City Fan Posted 15 June 2005 Posted 15 June 2005 I think we need 1 goalie (if henderson doesnt join), 2 centrebacks, a left back, a left winger, and 2 strikers to be able to make a serious attempt at promotion. Unlikely that we will be able to afford that many players though....
TrickyTrev Posted 15 June 2005 Posted 15 June 2005 Two centre backs, a left winger and a striker or two, one of which can be a utility players i.e can play left/right wing.
Simon Posted 15 June 2005 Posted 15 June 2005 At a pinch I think we can make do with a striker, two centre backs and a left winger- if De Vries shows the quality he apparently had at Hearts we'll be alright in the striking department.

We need another winger and at least 2 more at the back, one left sided and one central. Then we will have a decent team, let alone a squad to compete..

davieG Posted 15 June 2005 Posted 15 June 2005 Auto Promotion would be long shot this season I believe! From the Merc. Levein's quality control by andy mann It's a case of quality not quantity for Leicester City boss Craig Levein as he wheels and deals during the close-season. City will go into the new campaign with a reduced squad compared to last term. Levein could have as few as 20 players in his first-team squad for the new season after ruthlessly cutting numbers to meet the wage budget for next season. However, he is confident that the players he is bringing in to the club are of sufficient quality to excite the supporters and to push for promotion. Levein said: "Rab Douglas is a Scotland international and has played a lot of big games for Scotland and Celtic. "Alan Maybury, Momo Sylla and Patrick Kisnorbo are all internationals, and Paddy McCarthy has played for the Republic of Ireland Under-21s. "If you look at the quality of players we have and are bringing in, it is sending out a message to our supporters of what we are trying to achieve. "While we are going to have a smaller squad next season and the financial restrictions are fairly tight, we are signing what I consider to be quality players." The financial juggling task that faces City and Levein is underlined by the figures released by analysts Deloitte last week. Deloitte's Annual Review of Football Finance revealed that during their last Premiership campaign under Micky Adams, City's wage bill, although one of the division's smallest, was £24.1million. That was reduced to £11.75m last term and it is understood Levein needed to trim that figure by another £5m for the coming season. As a result, seven of last season's higher earners, including England goalkeeper Ian Walker and Supporters' Player of the Year Keith Gillespie, were allowed to leave when their deals expired. Young midfielder Stephen Dawson followed after turning down a new contract. Levein has aimed to be prudent in picking replacements. Indeed, Douglas, who will take over as No.1 from Walker, took a "fairly substantial" pay cut when he left Celtic. Levein holds up the 33-year-old goalkeeper as illustration that he believes City will be a force. "The fact that we have been able to sign him sends a message that we mean business," said Levein.
fosseman Posted 15 June 2005 Posted 15 June 2005 Does this mean we have got all the new players we're going to get or will there be more cleared out before any more come in?
shen Posted 15 June 2005 Posted 15 June 2005 Ulrik Laursen would go some way to filling our hole at either left back or centre back positions... Let's hope we can get him! I don't think CL will sign anyone for the wing with Tiatto, Wilcox and Morris in the squad already. Let's hope that at least one of the 3 will be available for each game...
Knightonian Posted 15 June 2005 Posted 15 June 2005 I don't think that promotion would be good for us in the long term anyway next Season. Top 10 and I will be happy.
shen Posted 15 June 2005 Posted 15 June 2005 I don't think that promotion would be good for us in the long term anyway next Season. Top 10 and I will be happy. 123663 Why do so many say this?? I get REALLY annoyed by that comment... give me ONE good reason why its NOT GOOD to get promoted?! The irony is that even a single season in the Prem would be hugely important for our longterm, because it would then mean that we get parachute payments for another two seasons if we get relegated (which we won't the season after next if we don't get promoted!!)...
Knightonian Posted 15 June 2005 Posted 15 June 2005 Simply because if we do go up next Season we will go straight back down again. Any of our players who are actually good will probably leave, Levein will ended up being sacked, and we'll end up in a situation like we were this Season where the majority of our fans refuse to accept that we are not Premiership quality any more, and will expect miracles. I would rather we spent a couple of Seasons developing into a good side, with a good team ethic, and a bunch of players who feel like they belong to this club. I think a team like that would have a far better chance of staying up, when we eventually get promoted again. Of course I would celebrate if we got promoted next year, but I would rather develop slowly (while at the same time our fans realising the kind of team we actually are).

CL (or someone else) will have to trim the player budget by another 2 mil next summer if we don't get promoted. The mere fact that we will get much more financial stability by getting promoted (even if it would only mean 1 season before coming down again) is the most important factor of all. I know what you mean, but your view is naïve. We could attract Premiership players if we go up, and with CL signing players on long term contracts, we wouldn't lose any for ridiculous fees like last time (hopefully)...
Nationwider Posted 16 June 2005 Posted 16 June 2005 Sorry if this is a bit of a re-hash of old stuff, but this is how I see our squad at the moment, with 17 first-team players definitely forming the nucleus of CL's squad: GK – Douglas, Henderson RB – Maybury, Stearman LB – Stewart, Sheehan (Wilcox, Tiatto) CB – McCarthy (Kisnorbo, Dublin, Stearman) DM – Kisnorbo, Gudjonsson (Tiatto) AM – Williams, Hughes LM – Tiatto, Wilcox (Stewart) RM – Sylla (Hughes) ST – De Vries, Connolly, Dublin Fringe players or players surplus to requirements: Morris, Heath, O’Grady, Wright, Logan, Canero 2 centre-backs (urgent) and a goalscorer with pace completes the 20-man picture.

Maybe Mr Chainsaw can put in the same sticky as the summer signings thread.
Nationwider Posted 16 June 2005 Posted 16 June 2005 I'd add that I'd really like to see either Morris or Canero prove themselves next year if they have the opportunity. Both seemed reasonably good signings on paper. It would be a pity if neither achieved anything for us - we're not exactly overflowing with talent in the RM position.
Nationwider Posted 16 June 2005 Posted 16 June 2005 In a word, no. 123867 No, you don't want them to succeed ( ) or no, we've not got many decent right-sided midfielders ?

Ultra Posted 16 June 2005 Posted 16 June 2005 Need at least one more central defender (Darren Kenton would be a decent signing if available), and another striker to provide competition for the gruesome twosome of Connolly and De Vries. Even then we'd be praying the squad wouldn't be wrecked by injuries and suspensions. 20 players are nowhere near enough for a 46-match season.
Guest freund Posted 16 June 2005 Posted 16 June 2005 Anyone who thinks we'll get anywhere near promotion is sadly deluded.
