Still keep in contact with loads of people thru the wonders of FB

DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 30 July 2011 Posted 30 July 2011 The UK includes the highlands of Scotland, so you're technically wrong Never been to a more beautiful place Now you are talking. It's heaven on earth. When I used to live in Dundee, I always went camping there, twice a year. It's the nearest place to heaven, without actually dying. BEAUTIFUL!
themotivator Posted 31 July 2011 Posted 31 July 2011 thanks guys and yeah gutted to be missing citys promotion push but maybe i could sneak in a quick return flight to the playoff final just out of curiosity. how much have you set aside for this trip? or are you going to rely on getting jobs when you are out there?

Jackirius Posted 10 October 2011 Posted 10 October 2011 Hopefully going next year around September time. Starting off in Thailand and then backpacking my way down through Malaysia and through to Indonesia, getting the boat over to Darwin and then Flying down to Melbourne. Then hopefully up the gold coast. After that flying to Japan and then making my way through China and India, back home for a month or so then off to USA for a couple of months. Should end about September 2013. Still in the planning stage but will need to start applying and booking things soon. Has anybody got any helpful websites or know of any forums or anything which would help me. Also any essential equipment which you would recommend and about how much will a fully packed backpack with all the gear cost? I've had a bit of a look but i'm sure i will think of more things to take along the way.
dave the caveman Posted 10 October 2011 Posted 10 October 2011 A decent backpack will cost you over £100 but should last forever. Equipment depends on what you're planning on doing really. You'll probably need a lot less than you think as even the most far flung places have shops where you can buy all the essentials. Obviously if you're thinking about camping then it takes on a whole new level but from your list of destinations I'd say the less you take the better. Lonely Planet's throntree forum is the best place for advice.

Thanks Yep i probably will be camping a fair bit of it, but i hopefully wont need all the cooking utensils and stuff as i will try not to venture too far from civilization. Also can you just kind of pitch your tent anywhere (within reason)?
SOCCERROO FOX Posted 11 October 2011 Posted 11 October 2011 If your camping as well, a good sleepingbag.....a good one that is suitable in very cold conditions, light weight, and doesn't take up much space. Also agree with Dave don't skimp on a cheap back pack, again, big enough, comfortable, lightweight and adjustable let's not forget it is your home for a long time. Plus as Tomassi is doing, when in Melbourne i'm always up for a bevy
dave the caveman Posted 11 October 2011 Posted 11 October 2011 Do you really want to camp? I don't even know how it would work in somewhere like Asia. There may be a whole camping culture that I've missed but I've never seen a foreigner just pitched up somewhere with a tent. Everyone stays in hotels/guesthouses. In Australia and the US it would probably be ok though.

Apparently its pretty easy just to throw up a tent on the beach or in a unused wood or field and people are easy about it.

If you need one later you can buy one.

Hmmm, I Just don't want to find myself in a situation on some island with hardly anything on it and no where to sleep when it is pissing down. I will try to stick to hostels though.

Jackirius Posted 12 October 2011 Posted 12 October 2011 Don't put yourself in that position then. Yes but if i'm going for a year, it is hard to predict where you will end up every day. Also i dont want to stick to the main touristy paths.
Christoph Posted 12 October 2011 Posted 12 October 2011 Are you going by yourself? As if so, I'm not sure going off into the wilderness by yourself would be the smartest of ideas. Not only of the dangers from wildlife i.e. snakes, spiders etc, but also injuries and people. It's pretty dangerous to be off the tourist paths as your morel ikely to end up with some dodgey locals. Not trying to put you off, just trying to make you aware of the dangers.

I am going with a friend, and cheers for the heads up, we wont be veering to far off the touristy paths but still want to experience different places. Anyway, still a lot of planning and a long way to go, but cheers for the info!
millzi Posted 13 October 2011 Posted 13 October 2011 I intend on doing something along these lines next year, not quite to the extent of 5-7 years, that's wild, fair play to you. Going to explore the rest of Australia, Thailand, Fiji, Bali and those kind of tropical places, nothing is set in stone yet, my cousin is coming over for a year in December and wants to do that kind of thing when her visa is almost up so I thought I'd tag along and it'd be some experience.

As an aside, I plan to go travelling for a year when my Sharesave scheme pays out next November. Lets hope share prices don't plummit, ey?
