Strongest Defence and Midfield in the Championship

Recommended Posts

With all the signings we've made this summer, I genuinely believe we have the strongest, or the potential for the strongest defence and midfield in the championship.

Matt Mills was arguably the best Centre Back in the Championship last year, Pantsil and Konchesky are proven premiership standard right and left backs. Peltier was the best left back in League 1 by a clear mile. St Ledger are international standard centre back and Bamba was pure class on saturday. Ball was on form when he played for Man City- and we have Tunchev and Berner as reliable reserves.

In terms of a midfield- we've got three class midfielders already- King, Wellens and Abe and we've doubled that with an equal if not better other three, Danns, Fernandes and Johnson. With Oakley, our 'captain' as a reserve, the bar for our midfield keeps on improving and improving.

If we can sort out are forwards then the team is- in terms of potential- in my opinion- the best club by a long mile (with the exception of West Hams Midfield)

We just need to sort out the forward situation!

Obviously as the whole defence and half the midfield is brand new- nothing is proven and whether the team gel and play well together is another issue but on top of all this we have the best manager in the championship so hopefully they will all click.

Agreed. Best defence on paper, strongest central midfield for sure. We lack quality on the wings however, and our striking options are mid-table standard imo.

Nolan & Parker along with some of the people they're linked with is pretty strong

And any Championship defence with Upson in it will be commanding

Plus they're not hoping a minimum of ten signings will gel. And upfront we're about mid-table

On the plus side we do seem to have the best strength in depth in defence & midfield.

Right?

We've certainly got a strong side - I still think we shouldn't take anything for granted yet - long season an all that.

I agree with this but it also isn't certain that Parker & Upson will still be at West Ham come 31st August. Parker wouldn't look out of place in a top Premier League side and I would be surprised if one didn't snap him up.

good post sure many will agree its hard to sometimes know what partnerships upfront can win a league especially before they have played together, a couple of years ago would would of been very happy with nugent, gallagher, waghorn and vassell upfront maybe it will do the job maybe we will see another signing come in i hope we do

Matthew Upson doesn't play for West Ham anymore.

He is a free agent indeed...

also, I think Ipswich will do well this season.

Manager (Jewell) achieved promotion before from this division.

Good acquisitions for Championship (spend Wickham cash well):

Chopra/Thomas/Bowyer/Ingimarsson/Stockdale/Fulop/Edwards etc....... :sweating:

Wishfull thinking I'm afraid.....:dunno:

A new back 5, with no natural left center back other than Tunchev. Bamba's poorest performances last season came when he had to play on the left side, looks very much that he will have to play that role this season. Hope he does better.

SSL is very right sided too, we need to find a working combination and do it soon, decent players all but not yet a solid unit.

Our midfield is vastly overated, they virtually disapeared when they came up against the stronger sides in the last couple of months of the season, simply could not cope. Danns gives us depth but is hardly the pivotal player we need, Johnson is a gamble and currently way off match fitness, Fernandez......:dunno:

Some decent potential but 'strongest defence and midfield', really yet to be proven and I do not think it will be easily achieved!

My bad meant right was thinking ahead of typing.

I agree- i think the fact that we are so strong does worry me that the team wil just be full of big characters that cant play well togehter. The talent is there and they should be able to play well together but who knows..

I do think we have a good defence in particular and also a good midfield. I do however think that West Ham have the strongest midfield in the division.

We need to see how they fare in league games before making statements like the OP.

Yeah i'm not including Parker, he'll be at Spurs come the end of the month surely. That said WH do still have a v strong midfield. Maybe we're 2nd there then.

We've got some work to do so you aren't proved right (again)
