I know this will be controversial but......

Having watched David Nugent hit the post in both games now,and appreciated his alround workrate & commitment,i believe him to quite capable of being our "20 goal a season" striker..............with the right man/men beside him !

One of those men i still believe could be Emile Heskey !

I know a lot of you won't agree but ask Michael Owen ,Tony Cottee,Robbie Fowler, and the rest of the goalscorers he's assisted, and they'd be the first to sing his praises.

I feel he could still do a job for us .....and Nugent !

We have Nugent, yes, who is capable of scoring plenty. But really, we ONLY have Nugent who's capable of doing that. The closest thing we have to another striker is Vaz but he's never been prolific. Waggy is woefully off form and Schlupp can't have that expectation placed on him yet.

if nugents two headers the one against cov and one against reading were about an inch to the right we would have a striker with 2 in 2 so yeah i have the faith that he could get us 20+ not a problem!

You could also say there is a fine line between someone being a 20 goal a season man and a 10 goal a season man.

Having said that I think he'll be good for us, I've seen enough to suggest with the correct service and support he can definitely do a job up there.

I agree and said in a previous thread that I believe Nugent could be our 20 goal man, and I strongly believe its just a matter of time before we get our defensive/attacking balance right.

Last season we shipped goals far too readily. As a result in the Real game we played deep to make sure it wasnt humiliating, but against reading we stayed far too deep scared to go forward and as a result we let them come at us and obviously lost.

Sven will show them the videos of Reading and im sure this will be corrected tonight probably with the introduction of Dyer/Gally who will want to go forward naturally. With this proper balance we will create much more in front of goal and Nuge could get those two goals tonight. James may even gift him his hat-trick by doing something characteristically insane :sge: :sge: lol he's seen it all before

I completely agree and have stated some where the same. A lot of his goals however do and have come from service from out wide, so that's the area we need to be strengthening as the 1st priority imo.

Sven wants a poacher and to push Nugent out wide.

Yes Yes Yes, good point well made, would love to see it happen, but hate it if hesk didn't live up to expectations.

Waggy is woefully off form...

Form is temporary, blah blah blah.... A settled run in the side would change that, he hasn't become a bad player, he just hasn't had the chance.

Why this obsession for a 20-a-season man I don't know.

We've got three, four players or even five all capable of hitting between 10 and 20 so why the panic?

Sven's time would be better spent on sorting a system to get the best from the current squad.

I agree the obsession with a 20 goal a season man is misguided. We need a few 20 assists a season men. Strikers can't score without chances.

Two points, class is permanent yes, but Waggy hasn't proved how much class he has yet. What he did for Pearson was good, but doesn't prove that he's a quality player.

Secondly, we don't have time to give people a run of games to get them to start scoring.

I believe that once we overcome the fear of losing that's come with our "favourites" tag and really seems to be hampering us, our attacking game will benefit greatly and plenty of chances will be created. Then we will really see whether Nugent, or whoever else, has the ability to convert regularly.

In a season's worth of football he proved he could cut it at this level, that's all we need right now. If he can't handle the Prem then let's worry about that when we're actually there.

There's 11 players out there, not just one. If somebody is in need of time to get settled in to a new team/system then other players could/should be taking up the mantle.

To say there's no time is pathetic.

Who the f**k walks in to a side and starts bagging consistently from the off...

Sven has spoken to Heskey and he has said maybe next year?

Thought this was already known and done to death?

YES! We need a 6ft + striker with him as he never wins the headers against the centre backs, but he is a goalscorer!!! Howard was good when he came on vs. Madrid, but Sven won't play him

I actually wouldn't mind if we played Nugent in the middle permanently provided we bought a decent winger. If I recall correctly he scored about 13 in the league last year? In a very, very average Portsmouth team. I'd back him to score 15+ in our team over the course of a season and unlike 98% of people I don't think the magic 20+ figure is the make or break of a promotion winning side. Just look at Foxblogger's statistic, something like 4 in the last 18 promoted teams had a striker who scored more than 20.
