wolfgang amadeus Posted 17 August 2011 Posted 17 August 2011 Nugent has never been a 20 goal a season man? Honestly don't see him scoring more than 10, think his best season for Preston he scored 1 in 3 and has been pretty poor everywhere else he's played. Really hope he steps up but I thought it was a poor signing to begin with.
drc Posted 17 August 2011 Posted 17 August 2011 So let's say Nuge is cabable of scoring 15-20 goals this season. What happens if he gets injured ? We have to do a new emergency loan because the only one of our other attackers who seems pretty lethal is Schlupp and he is to inexperienced to rely on probably.
volpeazzurro Posted 17 August 2011 Posted 17 August 2011 Form is temporary, blah blah blah.... A settled run in the side would change that, he hasn't become a bad player, he just hasn't had the chance. Why this obsession for a 20-a-season man I don't know. We've got three, four players or even five all capable of hitting between 10 and 20 so why the panic? Sven's time would be better spent on sorting a system to get the best from the current squad. I agree with the last sentence entirely as for me, this is the worrying bit about Sven. In todays Mercury it says exactly that 'but he (Sven) admits he does not know yet what his best side is. With all his swopping and changing last year it doesn't look promising to me. Remember the 8 games unbeaten run until Cardiff (logic dictates don't break up a winning side) when to accomodate Bruma he swopped evrything about? When Bruma was out for the week he replaced him with Vitor who scored 2 goals and we kept a clean sheet and then drops Vitor for Bruma in the next match. Just when we seemed to get a bunch of players who started to get some understanding with each other he'd have another little tinker and try something new. As daft as it sounds, possibly Svens bought too many players and is spoilt for choice. On the plus side Schmical was a good aquisition but is MILLS £4m better than HOBBS? or better than BAMBA. Wouldn't MEE have been a better prospect than St LEGER.. FERNANDEZ looks decent but is DANNS any better than what we'd already got, arguebly we need someone to thread balls through to NUGENT (good aquisition) and whoever his strike partner is because whether its Waggy, Schlupp, Messi, Villa or Beckford, if they don't receive the ball they can't do anything with it. It seemed to me on Saturday that no matter how well Gallagher, Dyer or King had been in pre-season or our opening matches, Sven was going to put out all his new boys come what may and the consequence was that they didn't gel and didn't seem to know what their brief was if there was one. Yes its early days but I can see a lot more tinkering and losing points in the meantime.
Guest MattP Posted 17 August 2011 Posted 17 August 2011 Dont understand how someone who has never been a 20 goal a year man in ten seasons will all of a sudden turn into one?
21st Century Fox Posted 17 August 2011 Posted 17 August 2011 Dont understand how someone who has never been a 20 goal a year man in ten seasons will all of a sudden turn into one? The right service. I'm not saying that as a definite just a possibility. Surrounded by better players He did net 14 for a fairly poor Pompey side last season.
liamsm Posted 17 August 2011 Posted 17 August 2011 Having watched David Nugent hit the post in both games now,and appreciated his alround workrate & commitment,i believe him to quite capable of being our "20 goal a season" striker..............with the right man/men beside him ! One of those men i still believe could be Emile Heskey ! I know a lot of you won't agree but ask Michael Owen ,Tony Cottee,Robbie Fowler, and the rest of the goalscorers he's assisted, and they'd be the first to sing his praises. I feel he could still do a job for us .....and Nugent ! All of that is possibly true, but he has already stated he is not ready to come home yet, so where is the controversy in this?
liamsm Posted 17 August 2011 Posted 17 August 2011 In a season's worth of football he proved he could cut it at this level, that's all we need right now. If he can't handle the Prem then let's worry about that when we're actually there. There's 11 players out there, not just one. If somebody is in need of time to get settled in to a new team/system then other players could/should be taking up the mantle. To say there's no time is pathetic. Who the f**k walks in to a side and starts bagging consistently from the off... SERGIO AGUERO!!!!!!
Wherethefoxhat? Posted 17 August 2011 Author Posted 17 August 2011 Nugent needs a partner first. ......which was the crux of this thread ???
KARL-LCFC Posted 17 August 2011 Posted 17 August 2011 Been impressed with Nugents first touch and work rate to get into the right positions.
Fox92 Posted 17 August 2011 Posted 17 August 2011 ......which was the crux of this thread ??? I know. A few names were pointed out. He still needs one. His work rate is top class, he can't do everything on his own.

Guest MattP Posted 17 August 2011 Posted 17 August 2011 Jeez.......another eternal optimist ! Not here to be optimistic I'm here to try and find ways and ideas of getting us promoted. "being optimistic" is a hinderence to that.

OK Sven, good luck, but majority on this forum have still yet to pass puberty and majority that have, have yet to see a naked women in the flesh!!!

iBleedLeicesterColours Posted 17 August 2011 Posted 17 August 2011 Like to point out that everyone seems to have forgotten Vassell. He played up top during our 5 game winning streak last season. Notched a few goals. Pair him with Nugent in a 442 you have a decent Championship strikeforce.
Guest Col city fan Posted 17 August 2011 Posted 17 August 2011 Nugent needs a partner first. Fox 92 you make some good posts IMO. Keep em coming... Nugent does need a partner.. Not gonna be emile though cos he's said no already...

This might be a good idea as well, everyone knows that he looks good in his more natural position of through the middle. Fox 92 you make some good posts IMO. Keep em coming... Thracian Posted 17 August 2011 Posted 17 August 2011 I agree the obsession with a 20 goal a season man is misguided. We need a few 20 assists a season men. Strikers can't score without chances. We actually need two 20 goals a season players two central midfielders who create goals and chip in with at least 10 goals each themselves and 25/30 goals from the wingers, substitutes and other players. And, right now we seem a long way off that which emphasises the folloy of our sorting.reinforcing our defence (supposedly) while neglecting our needs in attack.. It's early days yet but we're shaping up for failure again and for broadly the same reason as last season - not having a go with everything we've got. In both our matches so far we've set out playing cautiously. Our signings seem tailored for caution. Even if we sign a striker tomorrow that won't help our chance creation but with our lack of wingers and real imagination/pace/quick and well supported ceativity in midfield I just see us falling short. There's still time I know but in lagging so far behid already we're starting to create psychological problems for ourselves. That's why tonight's is so important, not just for the result, but the way we go about it. Promotion candidates create fear in the minds of their opponents and often get them to play more cautiously than they'd wish. We need to start building that fear factor but it's hard to see how with Sven's current approach..

Mack Posted 17 August 2011 Posted 17 August 2011 Neither Nugent or Vassell are natural goalscorers. I didn't really understand why Sven signed Nugent to be honest as he has always come across to me as a Gallagher type player and we already have Gallagher so why do we need another? My guess is by October he wont be starting.

Runs into dead ends all the time, generally useless, unless you need someone to run towards the corner flag, with zero ability to cross it. Gally as part of a front two could create chances for a partner though IMO Since Sven joined he's been limited by Sven picking the system, rather than looking at the players available and deciding what system would suit us best, too many square pegs round holes. Gally would be a great link man, he would also benefit by being on the edge of the 18yrd box, with his long shot ability he could grab a few.

Vassell is generally under valued at the club, and I felt he was our most consistant player last season. Remember, wide left isn't his natural position, centre forward is which is where he was when he scored a goal against Doncaster Rovers. I cannot belive you say Vassell is 'useless' and then you want Gallagher in instead who can't beat any player.
