I am Rod Hull Posted 9 October 2011 Posted 9 October 2011 http://www.saracens.com/news/view.php?Id=6565 "Saracens will break new ground by playing their Heineken Cup match against Biarritz Olympique in Cape Town on Saturday January 14th, 2012. ERC, organisers of the Heineken Cup, and the IRB have both approved an application by the English champions to play the match in South Africa, further growing the club’s brand, sponsor network and supporter base. The decision means South Africa will become the 10th country to host action from European rugby’s premier club tournament, which annually sees 24 elite teams from England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, France and Italy compete for the coveted trophy. Nigel Wray, Saracens chairman, said: “The world is becoming increasingly smaller and well connected, and, as a club, we are committed to thinking big and creating major events that people want to watch. We look forward to proceeding with these exciting plans, expanding the footprint and commercial value of European rugby.” Sod the fans, lets go for the cash.... Will we see this happen to football in the future ? Can you see a Champions League game like Man Utd v PSG being played in Beijing ? Sends a shiver down my spine....
purpleronnie Posted 9 October 2011 Posted 9 October 2011 Hopefully all rugby games will be played abroad.
Guest Bilo Posted 9 October 2011 Posted 9 October 2011 I wouldn't mind a pre-season friendly or two being played in Bangkok, excuse for a holiday. Any competitive game that requires a passport to attend can fvck off though.
Neil_LCFC Posted 9 October 2011 Posted 9 October 2011 Wouldn't be at all surprised if football ended up the same, after all it is all about the money not the fans since sky started throwing money around.
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 9 October 2011 Posted 9 October 2011 Hopefully all rugby games will be played abroad. PLANK!
davieG Posted 9 October 2011 Posted 9 October 2011 Looking to the distant future I can see this exporting of sporting events being the downfall off English sport and will follow the way of English manufacturing etc. We'll make these sports so popular in these Countries ( although why Rugby to Sth. Africa I've no idea) that they'll create their own allegiances as the sport grows in them they'll no longer be interested in paying to watch ours, we'll probably end up paying to watch them as our leagues collapse under the weight of high wages etc, - if that makes sense.

You could be right. Now you have me worried. I need a drink. . Oh bugger, that didn't work!
BlueSi13 Posted 9 October 2011 Posted 9 October 2011 I suppose rugby clubs in this country have got to try and find some fans somewhere
Criggers Posted 11 October 2011 Posted 11 October 2011 ( although why Rugby to Sth. Africa I've no idea) Sarries received a "substantial investment" from a South African investment company a few years back.
Asha Posted 11 October 2011 Posted 11 October 2011 How long will it be before there is a football equivalent of cricket's IPL?
Mack Posted 11 October 2011 Posted 11 October 2011 Hopefully all rugby games will be played abroad. I'll second that, cant stand the sport or it's stuck up fans.
