acooling08 Posted 6 November 2011 Posted 6 November 2011 The reason we are so blunt going forward is that we lack any wide players to attack at pace and get the ball into the box quickly. It was really noticeable on MOTD yesterday how all of the top teams sprint from the halfway line, whip the ball in quickly to be put away by a striker. Hell, even we did it for our 2nd goal against Burnley. I'm so sick of us getting the ball in an exciting position then either making a sideways/backwards pass, or stopping the ball on the edge of the opposition penalty area and pissing about with it. Thoughts?

Thoughts? Slightly simplistic way of looking at it imo. We've put in some fantastic performances without natural wide players. Depending on who we play and how they set up (and how we play) it's going to change. It would be nice to have options though, I won't argue with that.

Also a ball whipped in quickly is so difficult to defend against compared to a floated ball from 40 yards out.
Kitchandro Posted 6 November 2011 Posted 6 November 2011 If we're not clever or good enough to play it through the centre (and we're not against any defence having a good game) then we need to use some width. If we don't get at least one winger (yes a winger, not a wide player, you know what a winger is) then we will finish midtable.

Thoughts? Spot on. I sincerely hope the new manager picks up on this right away and gets into the loan market. If it's Pearson however you can probably forget it.

Thoughts? Was just about to start a similar thread myself, and i couldn't agree more. We are just far too one dimensional that it makes it easy for teams to stiffle us. The chelsea esq system of relying on the full backs to provide width that sven installed has meant that we don't have any natural wide players, too many central midfielders, and therefore no plan B. We really do miss a tricky wide player who runs at the full back, gets to the byline and delivers something in the box. Every successful team has one, and you don't have to just look at the prem. look at lallana for southampton. someone with a bit of flair that can beat a player and make something happen.........................heck i would even take a max gradel at the moment give the midfielders someone to pass to, get some width, stretch the pitch, creating more gaps in between the centre halfs for nugent to play in. come on MON get in there and sort it out WYS
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 6 November 2011 Posted 6 November 2011 One persons fault for having no width, and Sven takes the blame. He had all summer to get one in and we were barely linked to one. He brought in all these central mids in and the system wasnt working. Showed how inept he was.

All of whom joined or stayed with a prem team.

I have a feeling that Sven all along wanted to use the diamond as a preferred formation so he would not have been able to guarantee a winger a regular starting berth. This was his downfall as we do not have any cm with enough ability to adapt to that formation properly. This is why we are so inconsistent and too easy to play against as we struggle to counter attack.

I think I can count on one hand the times I've seen either Gally, danns or even Abe on the right hand side actually beat a full back and get in a cross from the byline. How this team needs some tricky little wingers with pace on the flanks... For me it's sooooo clear its sooo missing
Babylon Posted 6 November 2011 Posted 6 November 2011 Being linked with and genuinely going for are not the same. You speak like I don't know that. He said we weren't linked us with them, but we were.
Guest Basildon Fox Posted 6 November 2011 Posted 6 November 2011 You speak like I don't know that. He said we weren't linked us with them, but we were. No I am simply pointing out that we were linked with many people but this not the same as genuinely trying to get them. I don't remember Svennis ever comming out and saying we are after a winger desperately (except Beckham who is not even a winger). A little sensitive there. Time of the month?
Babylon Posted 6 November 2011 Posted 6 November 2011 No I am simply pointing out that we were linked with many people but this not the same as genuinely trying to get them. I'm aware of that, have you even read what he put or what I put? He said we weren't LINKED with wingers I said we were LINKED with wingers. Not tried to sign, not signed, LINKED. So you saying anything else it pointless, the point was proved by naming several players we were LINKED with.

Again I am AWARE that we were LINKED in the papers but there is NOTHING to SUGGEST that we were EVER AFTER THEM coming our of the club.
