BBC RL Commentary

Stringer and Young are excellent. Having mainly listened to the passive borefest of 5live this evening, I'm glad that Stringer and his sweaty bum-chum are there to add a different perspective and some much needed humour to proceedings. Stringer's post-match interviews with pearson are often more entertaining than the game itself, and tonight's was a classic of the genre. Having endured the abject misery of Barber (a derby fan, who you'll recall appeared to relish the day our nil nil draw with stoke sent us to league one), Stringer's hyperactive enthusiasm for the team and his research into the minutiae of club business and transfer links makes him unique among commentators and pundits covering Leicester City. Young, as an outspoken ex-player, is the perfect foil. Someone else has already pointed out how much better than the other local radio commentators these two are.

More seriously, these are people's jobs we're talking about. They're not well-paid, professionally mobile footballers, and there can't be too many broadcasting jobs to go around if they lose their ones, so let's bear that in mind.

(For what it's worth, I don't know either of them nor do I have any interest. Just expressing an opinion)

Spot on pal - couldn't agree more.

Sometimes it's very good, sometimes it's not so good. A bit like the players on the pitch.

(For what it's worth, I know them both extremely well and have done the job myself. Just thought it was worth mentioning that.)

They can care and have their say either in the football forum/phone in or half time/post match. Football commentary should be descriptive and informative of what is taking place on the pitch moment to moment so we can build an image up of the football game.

Exactly, i dont pay my money to hear about who's hat or hair is great or what the trip in the car was like. They have enough time during the match when the ball is dead etc to give us that "information", when the game is on, i want to know.. who is on the ball, where the play is moving, who is moving off the ball and making positions. etc.

Commentary that goes something like...

Stringer -Thats a nice hat in the 3rd row isnt it Alan?

Alan - Yes Ian... go on big Frankie

Stringer - I once had a hat like that...

Alan - ock aye cmon referee

Stringer - GOOOAAAAAA..................OHHHHH SO CLOSE FOR NUGENT THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stringer - have you seen the Falcon lately.....

pisses me off!

Yes, they are better than the old days... Barber etc, but being better than Sheep supporting crap isnt really much is it.

I have heard Stringer really sounding involved and descripitive and enjoyed those games..but he seems to just mentally wander away so often.

I listened last night for the first time - I only just found out how to get RL down here in the wilds of southern France - and I watched it at the same time on Thai TV... AH, the wonders of the interweb.

I only managed to sort it out for the second half, but I thought Alan Young was dreadful. Apart from missing a lot of the real action, he was so negative and critical - and a lot of the time he was just plain wrong. Just two examples: when Tony McMahon's free kick - which was superb - went in, his immediate reaction was "Schmeichel should have done better, he was nowhere"; and when Scott McDonald hobbled away after fouling (I think) Danny Drinkwater, he said "He's only doing it to avoid a red card" - McDonald was substituted within five minutes and is going to be out for at least four weeks with knee ligament injuries.

I'm all in favour of passion, even bias - after all he played for the club, and he's broadcasting (mainly) to City fans - but how about a few positive comments, or even (god forbid) a bit of insight into the game. Being a knob is, after all, largely voluntary.

I went to the game on my own last night and listened to them whilst watching the game in the stand.

I thought they were very good and have improved greatly of late.

If im honest....Ive heard worse commentators.

I do like the 5 live commentators who do there selected match....but I'd rather have people with a passion for the club commentating on the game than people who dont
