Guest glasgowfox Posted 9 February 2012 Posted 9 February 2012 Hi guys, hope ive put this in the right place, if not, apologies. I am intending to travel down to Leicester tomorrow for the game against Cardiff on Saturday. Been checking BBC Weather which is predicting up to 10cm of snow in the east midlands over the next 24 hrs. Can anyone tell me: 1. Is it snowing yet? 2. Is that the correct forecast for the Leicester area, and 3. Is there any mention of the game being in doubt. Again apologies if this is inserted in the wrong place but Glasgow to Leicester is a fair trip at the best of times. Many thanks
ScouseFox Posted 9 February 2012 Posted 9 February 2012 I was going to make this thread. I'm not sure as to whether to pay about 20 notes for the train to either find out the trains are cancelled or the match is off. Or to get there, go the match and then get stranded. Hmm.
ThurnbyLodgeFox Posted 9 February 2012 Posted 9 February 2012 it is snowing yes, the forecast is correct and the game will never be in doubt after Ipswich away last season
stourbridgefox Posted 9 February 2012 Posted 9 February 2012 There's snow predicted overnight but none really for Friday after the early hours. It doesn't warm up enough to melt the snow on Friday but there is plenty of time for the major roads to be gritted. But...if the -5 temperatures on Friday night/ Saturday morning are correct then the roads will probably be pretty treacherous early on Saturday. I think the grit lowers the freezing point of the ice to -8 so it should work to some extent. My guess is, the fact it isn't going to snow on Friday and Saturday and the time the powers that be have to grit the roads means the game will go ahead. There will still be snow down off the roads though and it will be pretty cold. I don't know if it is snowing in Leicester as I live in the West Midlands. It isn't snowing here...yet!
ousefox Posted 9 February 2012 Posted 9 February 2012 How badly do the trains cope with snow? will be pissed if i miss this and what would have been Brum the week after
Storming Posted 9 February 2012 Posted 9 February 2012 Im sure we have under soil heating at The KP not 100% though I think the game will be on unless we have a lot worse than we did last week and nthe seating areas become a safety issue Bloody Hell I begining to sound like someone from NORWICH
Guest glasgowfox Posted 9 February 2012 Posted 9 February 2012 thanks, intend travelling lunchtime tomorrow to be in leicester for 5ish, tough decision but think i will just have to risk it
Storming Posted 9 February 2012 Posted 9 February 2012 Well there will be some matches played and the pubs have sky so all wont be lost

isaidno Posted 9 February 2012 Posted 9 February 2012 it is snowing yes, the forecast is correct and the game will never be in doubt after Ipswich away last season and Ipswich at home 2 seasons ago when we were about the only game on in the snow
Milton Keynes Fox Posted 9 February 2012 Posted 9 February 2012 We played Ipswich at home in 2010/2011 and it had been snowing heavily days before, but the stadium has under soil heating so all the snow fell and melted and so the game was on, it'll definitely be on but trains WILL run but they will run LESS regularly than usual, it is very weird to have ALL services disrupted.
stourbridgefox Posted 9 February 2012 Posted 9 February 2012 I am "ment" to heading over from Lincolnshire to Birmingham tomorrow evening so keep us updated please!! The moment I said it wasn't snowing it started...raining!! Pretty cold rain though. It will probably turn to snow as it gets dark.
mrsizzett Posted 9 February 2012 Posted 9 February 2012 No snow here yet..... it is expected later tonight though. we only ever get a light sprinkling compared to some parts of the country so don't think it will cause too much distruption. we do have undersoil heating and a fantastic team of groundsman so doubt it would be called off for pitch reasons, only doubt would be safety around the ground, but the Ipswich game continued with no white markings on the pitch not so long ago !!!!

The stadium may well have under soil heating as do most grounds. But most of the time it's the surrounding areas that course the games to be abandoned.

But most of the time it's the surrounding areas that cause the games to be abandoned. As someone else said, cast your mind back a couple of seasons, we played Ipswich and Newcastle at home in January and on both days I think we were one of only a few games played, I'm sure the Newcastle match was on Sky because the original Premier league fixture had been cancelled. The staff did a fantastic job of gritting the surrounding areas to make sure the game went ahead. It would take a hell of a lot of snow to stop a Leicester game being played at home, which I don't think we'll get before Saturday.
Lamby Posted 9 February 2012 Posted 9 February 2012 Feel sorry for me, got Chesterfield away and paid out £27 for train tickets, just hoping thats not called off

StanSP Posted 9 February 2012 Posted 9 February 2012 Those saying that under-soil heating will prevent the pitch from freezing etc etc. Yes, that's all well and good for the match itself. But clubs have to take in to account surrounding areas of the stadium to ensure public safety. If I remember correctly, there's been times where matches have had to be called off because it is too dangerous for the public (thousands of them around at the same place) to be around in such treacherous conditions. Just a warning that it has happened before where matches have been called off because of this!
Libertine Dream Posted 9 February 2012 Posted 9 February 2012 I think the forecast is going to be pretty much spot on again and having looked at tomorrow's and Saturday's forecast then not much will melt, however we have a day to prepare so I'd say we'll get the game on, especially as the Council and highways agency are well prepared this time around so I doubt the country will grind to a halt like it has previously. Its worth checking the met office forecast, updated on the hour and will have local observations published to keep you updated. http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/em/leicester_forecast_weather.html http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/em/hinckley_forecast_weather.html http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/em/castle_donington_forecast_weather.html

Deffinately not just for the benefit of travelling fans but for the travelling players aswell end of the day it is a football match if its unsafe to travel its not worth it. Snow is always good until you have a car crash and end up paying a massive excess and losing all your no claims and then you just wish you ended up staying at home and not risked it
