Guest MattP Posted 27 February 2012 Posted 27 February 2012 Going through a bit of a nostalgic sporting phase at the minute, started watching a few of ESPN's brilliant 30 for 30 series they did. When I was about 11 I started to fall in love with South American football, I stayed up watching teletext to get the scores and will never forget Argentina 0-5 Colombia in the last qualifier before USA 94. Incredible to think now that Colombian side went into the World Cup as 3rd faves behind only Brazil and Germany before crashing out and eventually ending with the murder of Andrea Escobar for scoring that own goal. "The Two Escobars" Is 1hr 45 but this is a great watch and unmissable for anyone who remembers those few weeks, this shows the relationship between that side and drug lord Pablo Escobar, how drug money nearly took Colombia to the top of the world and how Pablo was both loved and hated by sections of his people. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3OiYGPmIM0
pSinatra Posted 27 February 2012 Posted 27 February 2012 I'll be giving The Two Escobars a viewing.........looks good!! While you're taking a trip down memory lane.............. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZwOxMxa9I4 I actually quite like Taylor as a person, just not as England manager. You knew it was never meant to be when you hear him shouting "Carlton!!!! Carlton!!!!"
Guest MattP Posted 28 February 2012 Posted 28 February 2012 Watching that again its actually very interesting. Taylor had the foresight to see a lot of things we all say now. Youth development needs more in depth work on skill and we need to stop thinking that just because we invented the game our way is not always the right way. We were robbed in that Holland game as well, terrible refereeing.
Mack Posted 28 February 2012 Posted 28 February 2012 I actually quite like Taylor as a person, just not as England manager. You knew it was never meant to be when you hear him shouting "Carlton!!!! Carlton!!!!" I agree Taylor is a decent bloke but by golly he was out of his depth as England Manager. He didn't treat the end of Lineker's career with much grace either.

I've seen "The Two Escobars" and it is absolutely brilliant but very sad indictment of the country too. I also remember seeing that game prior to USA 94 and telling all my mates at school that Colombia were going to win it! I supported them at the start of the tournament as obviously England weren't there. As for great sporting documentaries - When We Were Kings is probably my favourite. It explores so much more than just the Rumble in the Junglr and is a brilliantly directed piece of work. I was pleasantly surprised by how good "Senna" is too. Wasn't too sure why my nan got it me for Xmas but it's terrific.
FoxesAreBlue Posted 29 February 2012 Posted 29 February 2012 Senna is my absolute sporting hero over anybody else - I love that film and also the Top Gear tribute that the did to him. Whether you like Clarkson or not, oi have to agree his film making here is both fair, honest and sublime. http://m.youtube.com/index?desktop_uri=%2F&gl=US#/watch?v=aNmqn3heGgE
Guest MattP Posted 1 March 2012 Posted 1 March 2012 Going to give Senna a watch this week. I've seen "The Two Escobars" and it is absolutely brilliant but very sad indictment of the country too. Wasn't too sure why my nan got it me for Xmas but it's terrific. I've got the DVD of When We Were Kings, absolutely brilliant piece of work. Don King managed to get a president of a starving African country to put up ten millions USD to stage a fight there, how this man did it I'll never know.
purpleronnie Posted 1 March 2012 Posted 1 March 2012 Loved watching all those documentaries ESPN aired. But the hoop dreams documentary has to be one of the best ever made.
Langston Posted 1 March 2012 Posted 1 March 2012 Not really sure if I'd class this as a sports documentary, still a great little film none the less.

Fantastic, never heard of this but it's been uploaded. I'm gonna give this a look tonight. The internet was invented for youtube.
purpleronnie Posted 1 March 2012 Posted 1 March 2012 Its very long (about 3 hours) but it was filmed over 5 years.
Guest MattP Posted 1 March 2012 Posted 1 March 2012 Its very long (about 3 hours) but it was filmed over 5 years. I've just gathered that after seeing it's in 18 parts.
Amin Posted 2 March 2012 Posted 2 March 2012 A sport documentary that I really enjoyed when it was on itv4 last summer was Chasing Legends. It follows the now extinct Team Columbia (the old team of Mark Cavendish) through the 2009 Tour de France.
ScouseFox Posted 2 March 2012 Posted 2 March 2012 That Nigel Benn/Gerald McClellan one on ITV a few months back was pretty emotional.
Amin Posted 2 March 2012 Posted 2 March 2012 That Nigel Benn/Gerald McClellan one on ITV a few months back was pretty emotional. Yes, the whole story seemed messed up.
