In th X-Men First Class film, in a scene set in 1963 London a young Professor X pays for a couple of pints with a £5 note! I would imagine the barman wouldn't be very happy about this (unless of course he was told to keep the change!) In answer to the OP - In the 70s I drank from a beaker at the kitchen table, though later in the decade I was able to open the fridge or turn on the tap.
