Rob1742 Posted 2 June 2012 Posted 2 June 2012 Sad to hear of a death that will shortly hit the world of football. Umbro the iconic brand that many have been brought up with will shortly be binned by their owners Nike so they can concentrate on their key brand. During the seventies, when kits were proper kits, there were great rivalry between Umbro and Admiral. Leicester had a superb Admiral kit as did England, Norwich, Spurs and many others. Umbro competed with superb designs for Man City, Scotland and West Brom to name a few. Recent years have seen Umbro emerge as a force again, cotton quality kits and designs that replicated the superb designs of the seventies. The recent England kits have been superb and a closer inspection of the Man City designs highlight a difference to the usual tat that is made available to the fans. But Umbro is making a loss for Nike and it makes sense for Nike just to use their key brand. So it looks like Umbro will die, or be purchased by a high street sports retailer so it can fit in at the entry level like other key brands that have died like Gola. We will look at the seventies at a time when there were great kits, we will look at a brief time when Umbro made a comeback and gave us some quality back. But that will be it, back to the usual mass market drop where we are only offered one brand, one option so we all wear the same thing. RIP Umbro
Finnegan Posted 2 June 2012 Posted 2 June 2012 That's a shame, they've been responsible for some beauties lately.
AKCJ Posted 2 June 2012 Posted 2 June 2012 That is a surprise. Wonder who'll design the England kits now.
1884Fox Posted 2 June 2012 Posted 2 June 2012 Oh that's a shame they've done the England kits for years now
pSinatra Posted 2 June 2012 Posted 2 June 2012 Manufacturers of my favourite City kit. Umbro have produced some iconic kits over the years & it will be a shame to see them disappear.
SystonFox Posted 2 June 2012 Posted 2 June 2012 never knew we had an umbro kit. wow. i'll miss umbro kits particularly making England i'm not a fan of Nike replica kits and inevitably they will now supply England. you mentioned Gola though, im 25 and if you had Gola boots as a youth you were known as a pikey or a tight cunt, did this not apply to those older than me?
Petchy Posted 2 June 2012 Posted 2 June 2012 I'm fairly sure they just want to sell it on, so if someone does buy it then it won't die out? Just wait and see before jumping to conclusions my friend.
Jay Posted 2 June 2012 Posted 2 June 2012 I'm sure someone terrible like sports direct will buy the brand it seems to already sit well with all the other terrible makes like Donnay, Lonsdale etc they stock Iconic? not really
