I'd quite happily keep all children in complete ignorance from being taught religion before the brain is fully developed.

quite so

"Give me a child until he is seven and I will give you the man".

if you're gonna brainwash someone , do it early

Never understood this attitude, would you say you wouldn't teach your children not to steal, not to be rude or ignorant, not to bully before their brain is fully formed? Of course parents should bring their kids up to reflect what they feel is right or wrong and if that means bringing them up religious or atheist then so be it.

It's not like there aren't people who have rejected their religious/non-religious upbringing in the past.

Will you let them read the Daily Mail?

They're too old for comics now.

Why do we have a watershed on tv? Why do video games, films and some music have age restrictions? Why do we keep our kids away from pornography? Society in general accepts there are things that kids should not be exposed to until they're old enough. If you don't think that, that's up to you but you're in the minority

What the blithering hell are you going on about you mentalist? You were talking about keeping Billy Bragg's (extreme?) politics away from impressionable young minds...and now you appear to be liking his political views to pornography. I say again, have you banged your head?

You clearly do not have children.

"Society in general accepts there are things that kids should not be exposed to until they're old enough"? Society, in general, certainly does not accept any such thing of the sort. We have a watershed on TV because a handful of people believe they have the right to censor what you see and hear; it exists to ensure that people do not hear words on a television set that they can hear at work, in the pub, at the football ground and in the street. It is an absolute nonsense.

Society, in general, swears like a trooper, gropes and grinds in public places while every child I know shoots the crap out of soldiers in 18-rated games. You appear to believe that keeping people in ignorance is a benefit to society - in which case I'm telling you that you are an abject fool and an anachronism.

IMO the acid test as to how liberal you are re what your children see and read is whether you would allow them to be a regular user of this forum.

Half my posts are written by my kids.

I take it they're the ones without the flowery language ?!

My son is a deft exponent of using "cvntflaps", "cheesecock" and "fvckface" in conversation with religious door2door callers.

I leave all the word stuff to them normally, I stick with the pretty pictures as that's more my level.

Can't be enough "Cs" in the box when the family are gathered round for a nice game of Scrabble !

I brought up Bragg for his political views being an influence. The extreme views I was mainly referring to were the ones that this thread are actually about. You likened Braggs politics to pornography not me, I was just saying that there are some things that kids should not be exposed to until they're older, pornography being one of them. If you don't agree that's fine, but can you really not have any sort of debate without resorting to hostility?

Are you related to MattP?

No-one said it should be censored. I only said that extreme views are not what we want kids listening to until they're older because it does have an effect on them whether some people are willing to admit it or not

...and it would help awfully if you could actually remember what you typed.

lol no to the first one. To the second, I wasn't referring to Bragg with that. You can view society's blanket approach to what's appropriate as assuming that all kids are the same and not mature enough to be exposed to some things till they say it's ok, which is obviously rubbish. Some kids are mature enough at a younger age and if you believe yours are that's fine. I never said keep kids in ignorance you chose to interpret it that way. The blanket approach is basically to protect the most vulnerable and impressionable. Ultimately, it comes down to parents to decide what is or isn't appropriate for their kids, they're the ones that know if they're mature enough. My view is it's better to protect them if you're not sure they're ready for it yet
