Leicester Half Marathon / Marathon

Interesting. I guess some of it comes down to natural ability. From reading your posts you, along with others like Bluefoxtim and blue-army-andy, seem to have a certain amount of natural pace and fitness. On the other hand myself and probably others on here have to make up for a profound lack of ability with lots of miles of training. I've definitely noticed that in half marathons I've suffered towards the end which has to be lack of endurance from my legs simply not used to running for that amount of time. Alternatively maybe my race pace was too quick and I would have been ok if I'd gone a little slower - in that case more speed sessions could have helped.

Maybe someone else who knows more can help, I imagine the truth is somewhere in between, i.e. you have to mix up your training with long runs, speed sessions, etc. Something I probably don't do enough of.

Anyway just got back from a 5km, 22:23, quickest I've done for awhile.

You're quite tall, James; Carl struggles with distance, and has "blown up" at the 10-11 mile mark on every half he's ran (which is why he won't touch a full marathon). I put it down to (a) hydration and fuelling, and as he needs a lot more than I do, and (b) the fact he never, ever stretches, so his muscles don't recover.

I'm running the full. My first ever. Less than 5 hours will do me

Really good luck.

You should aim to enjoy your first marathon and make sure you finish. After all you may not do another one, most people don't. Don't worry too much about time.

Pace yourself and don't go out too quick or you will run the risk of burning up at about 20 miles.

The Leicester course is a good one but it isn't pancake flat. if you can get someone to say go to Thrusssington which is about half way round and give you a good cheer then that will help as public support in that part of the course is quite sparse.

Done a couple of sessions on new walk specifically because I've headed it's a killer!

You will be fine. How's the trainig going?

New walk is a killer for those hoping for a PB because it is at the end of the race but actually it isn't that steep when you run it on its own. There's a nasty little hill at around 14 miles followed by a steepish descent which can get your legs if you are not prepared.

I've no natural ability whatsoever but it sounds like you have the right approach.

As for your lack of endurance then I'd consider the following.

Pace for the first half. Are you going too quick?

Nutrition. Are you sure you are fuelled up enough before and hydrated properly throughout? Just a 2% deficience in hydration can lead to a decline in performance.

mileage. Are you doing enough or maybe too much at too quick a speed??? For half marathons you don't really need to do a lot of heavy mileage a couple of runs at say 10-12 miles more than three weeks pre race should suffice.

Training is up an down at the min, mostly down - been horrendously busy and struggled to fit it in, GNR next weekend though and me and my mate are watching Sunderland v Liverpool on the day before too so I'll see how I feel after that.

I have. I've got some stretching and strengthening exercises to do, and I can do non-impact cardio, or I can run in the swimming pool. Hoping to be able to start jogging again this week, but I've got a lot of pain in both ankles at the moment, so it's not looking realistically possible yet.

Cheers for the advice.

I'm going to need a change of t shirt halfway round as I sweat buckets and it hurts me nips no end. Even when fully vassed up.

Make sure it's a technical t-shirt with "wicking" properties - its takes swear away from your skin and dry really quickly, you can pick Karrimor ones up in sports direct for just a couple of quid

Just over a week to go, was ill a couple of weeks ago and couldn't train for like 8 days which was a bummer. Back into it now, did just over 5 miles today. What about everyone else? Training going good? Any on the day advice? Foods to eat? Clothing to wear etc etc

Training as a whole went pretty badly, and as a result I'm not expecting a good race at all. That said this is only my second marathon and I think I'm lucky to even be in a fit state to start at all.

Originally I was aiming for 3:45 but now that time is irrelevant to me and I just want to finish.

As for advice on the day, read any edits of runners world and the advice for pre-race will pretty much be the same.

Hydrate the week before, up your intake of carbs so that they make up about 50-60% of your diet, try to get a good nights sleep before the race and sort your kit out the night before.

I have my routine before races so ill be sticking to that - I also have my routine after races too (namely a big curry and a rare pint) ill be sticking to that too as this is my last race of the year.

I hear conflicting reports about the week before an event regards to training(im doing the half)

What do you reckon is best?

Ive heard some say no runs in the last week,to a gentle couple of runs 3milers.

I personlaly do my longest last one a week before and then a 3miler midweek and thats it....no wonder i cant beat 1hrs 50mins!!!\

Good Luck all...dont forget we have to COLLECT our race things from Phoenix Centre BEDFORE the race!!

Yeah, what do most people run the week before? (im also doing the half). Just light? Or what?

Really depends, I normally do sweet FA but then again I've always gone completely against 'recommendations'.

Asked in the general running thread but didn't get a reply so ill clutch at straws in here too!

Anybody fancy a drink after the race? My only other option is going back to where I work in the afternoon for a lift home and I don't fancy that much.
