Walker Posted 15 December 2013 Posted 15 December 2013 Chris Froome should definitely have been top 3, winning the ultimate endurance test deserved more recognition. Ah well.
Jimothy Posted 15 December 2013 Posted 15 December 2013 He won it back in July. Glad Leigh Halfpenny got in the top three though, and not another Cyclist. Yeah cycling fans seem to come out in droves to vote for this, so as much as I like Froome was glad to see he didn't place. Thought 2011 was a weak year, but there was noway Cavendish deserved the main award for his TDF stage wins when you had two Golf Major winners on the list. Made it look even more of a joke when a year later the guy who won the whole race picks up the same award.

Didn't like it when Cavendish won, didn't like it when Wiggins won, 2012 was an impossible year to call, but for Mo Farah winning two golds, not to even get in the top three was a joke. So I'm glad a Cyclist has been pushed out this year, at the expense of a Horse Racing legend who deserved his place, and the best player on the Lions tour who in my opinion was the only real outsider with a chance of getting in the top 3, think he was 66/1 to win, and I was hoping he would of got top 3, should of put a bet on. And as it's you who's replied, I look forward to seeing Jerzy Janowicz win oversees Sports Personality Of The Year 2014

But it's a public vote, and Man Utd have lots of fans, so what can you do. I'm sure Janowicz will be delighted to finally pick up a trophy
Jimothy Posted 16 December 2013 Posted 16 December 2013 It wasn't even remotely close! Murray: 401,470 Halfpenny: 65,913 McCoy: 57,854 Mo Farah: 51,945 Ben Ainslie: 48,140 Chris Froome: 37,343 Hannah Cockroft: 26,151 Christine Ohuruogu: 13,179 Justin Rose: 9,833 Ian Bell: 5,626 Total votes: 717,454
Darkon84 Posted 16 December 2013 Posted 16 December 2013 Jesus, that's one hell of a winning margin! As much of a nob as Murray is, at least he took the pi$$ out of himself a bit, which helped with his boring speech. Still can't believe the BBC STILL managed to find a way to shoehorn Mandela in to the show though, urgh, it's cringeworthy. Shouldn't expect anything less from them though I guess.
Guest MattP Posted 16 December 2013 Posted 16 December 2013 Fair play to Murray but I can't help thinking the BBC missed a huge opportunity here. Nelson Mandela would have been a fantastic winner and it would have been a huge statement to any racists. Have people forgotten the rugby world cup cup where he walked on the pitch wearing a shirt? Sorry I posted my reply without reading above, did they actually manage to get him in?

It was always going to happen though wasn't it. I can't believe I was actually surprised when Gabby started saying how the world has lost a great man blah blah, they showed the standard video from the RWC '95 with Peinaar, and then blurted out some apparently inspirational quote which didn't really apply. I think it was along the lines of it's not how you affect the world, but the people within it. He sure did affect a lot of peoples lives, and not always for the best!

Is he a nob though? I know this is all subjective but I happen to think he's one of the more likeable 'celebrities'/sportsmen. He's down to earth, seems pretty intelligent, isn't constantly in the papers for scandals, incredibly driven and motivated about his sport and when being interviewed, gives genuine and honest answers rather than stock answers drilled into them by a PR Manager. If people still get salty about his comment about England years ago they need to lighten up.

If people still get salty about his comment about England years ago they need to lighten up. Bang on. As has been said before, there's no rational reason to actually not like the guy, they've all been debunked. Of course people can and do, but that's because they're thin skinned little Englanders who can't get over the obvious joke from over 7 years ago and try to justify it by making up some stuff about him being 'boring' or 'miserable' when anyone rational can see he's merely reserved and dry, and somewhat guarded when talking to the media, and with good reason.
