Libertine Dream Posted 29 December 2012 Posted 29 December 2012 Don't pay attention to the honours list, dish them out to anyone nowadays
anotherharboroughfox Posted 29 December 2012 Posted 29 December 2012 Peter Higgs is probably the most deserving on that list.
accessory Posted 29 December 2012 Posted 29 December 2012 Hopefully he'll turn it down. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-20858353 Unlikely. He'll have been told about the award weeks ago, like Danny Boyle was, and could have declined it then as Boyle did.
Guest MattP Posted 29 December 2012 Posted 29 December 2012 Hopefully he'll turn it down. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-20858353 Why would he? He deserves it.
Jon the Hat Posted 29 December 2012 Posted 29 December 2012 Hell no he won't turn it down, recognition of his incredible efforts over many years. As he said in the interview, he got it for being him, so he won't change who he is. Well done Wiggo. Mind you what Mo did wrong is anyone's guess.
Webbo Posted 29 December 2012 Posted 29 December 2012 Ridiculous that anyone should be awarded a Knighthood so young. Look at Sir Chris Hoy this year, 2 more golds and the honours people have nothing left they can give him. These awards now are more about politicians associating themselves with success than rewarding people for hard work and achievement.

Not that I agree with all this claptrap but why would Mo. have got more than a CBE? Notable absentee re contribution to the Games is Danny Boyle. Credit to him for sticking to his principles if he turned an honour down.

Wiggo apparently didn't becuase his mum told him she wanted to go to the palace Kelly Holmes was made a dame for two golds in one Olympics, Mo achieved the same thing, but it seems there is still a quota system in place.
leicsmac Posted 29 December 2012 Posted 29 December 2012 Boyle did turn it down...don't remember where I read it but know he declined.
Jon the Hat Posted 29 December 2012 Posted 29 December 2012 I dont really understand why you would turn down an honour. As a general point, if you think you are a man of the people, and you have the chance to show that you can still be a man of the people with a knighthood, you should take it. If only posh people accept them, then they will always be seen as posh. If blokes from the North who cycle of make films get them, then they become more real and more for the people. I guess some people are not so comfortable they would not change.

Ah, ok. The least sweat, least effort way to achieve such status would be to prefix your name with "Sir" by a change of name deed eg Sir Jon the Hat.
Jon the Hat Posted 29 December 2012 Posted 29 December 2012 I would assume its because they are anti monarchy? Even then, if I were anti-monarchy I would accept the honour as being sod all to do with the monarchy and then continue as I was to make a point.

Jon the Hat Posted 29 December 2012 Posted 29 December 2012 Well as the awards are presented by or in the name of the reigning monarch, they do. You probably think she runs the country too?
clare Posted 29 December 2012 Posted 29 December 2012 I think it's well deserved. If you look at what he has achieved in cycling, then it's immense.
purpleronnie Posted 29 December 2012 Posted 29 December 2012 You probably think she runs the country too? Errr ok.
