pSinatra Posted 6 April 2013 Posted 6 April 2013 Eh? I've not broken down, it's just some routine maintenance. I just just think giving to a clean is a healthy thing to do as they tend to get mucked up. If cleaning it gives some improved performance / economy I'll be happy, if not nothing lost! I've never heard of people blocking them off. I wouldn't have thought it's a good idea because they help to reduce emissions and bypassing it it could lead to you failing an MOT on exhaust emissions. Yeah, it is a risk blocking it off when it comes to MOT but the general opinion seems to be that it has a considerable impact on fuel economy. It might be that they block it off & unblock it for the test? I'm getting my mechanic mate to service the van soon & I'll be speaking to him this week to arrange it. I'm going to mention the EGR & see if what he says. At the very least I'll ask him to clean it & see if that means replacing the gasket.

I reckon it's one of those things where it'll probably be OK, but if you take it off and the gasket's mashed and you don't have a replacement, it'll be a right pain in the arse. The last thing I want to do is lose inlet pressure.
Saxondale Posted 29 May 2013 Posted 29 May 2013 Voice of experience required please! My car developed a weird noise the other day, which started as a feint moan and got louder over a couple of days. It is roadspeed linked and unaffected by steering, power or suspension loading. I would best describe it as a roar, becoming a buzz at higher speeds. It (seems that it) is coming from the nearside front. The first suspicion would have to be wheel bearing - however a) it doesn't seem to be affected by shifting load between the wheels by swerving and b) I know what a bearing sounds like and it's not quite like this in my experience. My second thought was CV joint. I do get the occasional tap when turning the wheel at parking speed, which would affirm this theory, but nothing serious enough to concern me. However, my hunch said it was the tyre. This evening, I swapped the wheel for the spare and took the car for a spin. The noise SEEMED to disappear - though I must add I didn't take the car out too far so couldn't get it right up to speed. The fact that the noise seemed to disappear when the car ran on the spare supports my theory that the tyre is the problem. What is confusing me is that I have inspected the tyre as thoroughly as I can and it doesn't appear to be outwardly damaged. I therefore have two questions: 1) What could be wrong with my tyre that is both invisible but noisy? Could it be marginally deformed in shape? It does have a VERY slow flat and sometimes gets a bit soft - by which I mean I have to top it up every eight weeks or so. Could this have distorted the shape enough to make it run with a grumble? 2) Are there any other factors that may have made the noise disappear when running on the spacesaver? For instance, could the reduced size of the spacesaver shifted the weight / ride height around such that it disguised the root cause of the noise? Thanks in advance!
stix Posted 31 May 2013 Posted 31 May 2013 Where's the best place to get cheap tyres from? Depends how cheap you want them...

separator Posted 31 May 2013 Posted 31 May 2013 I had a faulty brake caliper once, would cause noise and vibration when getting to about 50 mph. Basically the caliper wasn't releasing the brake pad from the disc, not enough to seize the wheel but enough the cause the noise at a certain speed. Brake disc on the wheel in question was getting red hot which was a bit of a giveaway in the end. As said above maybe your fan or timing belt is slipping. You don't want a broken timing belt as that would probably write your engine off if it broke with the engine running. If your tyre was a bit flat and you hit a pot hole it could have deformed it. See how it goes with the spare I guess.
separator Posted 31 May 2013 Posted 31 May 2013 Where's the best place to get cheap tyres from? I've always used ETC tyres off Blackbird Road who seem to do a reasonable range of budget tyres
