BigAL88 Posted 22 February 2013 Posted 22 February 2013 hoping some one on here maybe be in the know. i was over my overdraft by 2 pounds for 1 day. and i received a 76 pound charge. the reason i was over my overdraft was because the day before the interest put me over. iv spoken to them over and over at great expense and after getting palmed of to all different people i basically got a polite **** off we don't care. i earn a very poor weekly wage and they know this. but they continue to take the majority of my money and continue to talk about future charges of a greater value told them that i have 2 kids to support and bills ect. but still they dont give a toss. can they really get away with this? what seems like day light robbery to me! has anyone else got or had this problem or know how to deal with it. just want to know the facts before i go in all guns blazing... thanks in advance for your comments EDIT: the bank is natwest

Carl the Llama Posted 22 February 2013 Posted 22 February 2013 1500 is the limit and i get 22 pounds charge in interest to Could you be a bit more specific?
pSinatra Posted 22 February 2013 Posted 22 February 2013 I can't be sure but I don't think I've ever been charged for going over unless it's been because of a transaction. I don't think the interest sending me into the red has ever been the reason for an extra charge. Different banks have different ways of charging for 'unauthorised overdrafts', but £76 sounds ridiculous. Of course they know you are on shit money & can't afford such a charge. They also know that you will be screwed for cash & will probably incur further charges at the end of this month. The same will happen the following month & so on.......easy money as far as they're concerned. You're a better customer to the bank than someone who never goes overdrawn & never pays extortionate charges. I don't know the full story, but the charges don't seem justified. Speak to them again, ask for a breakdown of the charges & ask for the contact details of the Financial Ombudsman
VLC86 Posted 22 February 2013 Posted 22 February 2013 Who do you bank with? I work for one and you would be entitled to one refund in the life time of your account BUT if you have gone over by less than £12 we wouldn't charge you. Unfortunately the ombudsman option won't get you far as these charges were deemed fair in a test case. You might want to stress that you can't afford to pay them and see if you can speak to a specialist debt team and see if you can make an arrangement to freeze future charges but this won't do your credit rating any good. Good luck
jonthefox Posted 22 February 2013 Posted 22 February 2013 This http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/reclaim/bank-charges worked for me.
Rincewind Posted 22 February 2013 Posted 22 February 2013 When I was first unemployed I went over my overdraft but wasn't charged that much. You could tell them you feel their charges are too much and are switching banks. Although not sure if tou'd get an overdraft right away. Your bank also does not know.
Trav Le Bleu Posted 22 February 2013 Posted 22 February 2013 Keep asking to be passd up the line of authority each time you speak to someone. If they're anything like the bank I used to work for, they will lose bonus pay if customer complaints reach a certain level - say for instance the district manager - he doesn't need that kind of hassle. Always ask for the contact details of the ombusman too, they don't like that!
