jamdonuts Posted 17 May 2013 Posted 17 May 2013 http://www.lcfc.com/news/article/160513-twih-the-end-of-the-bloomfield-era-824023.aspx? Thoroughly enjoyed reading this article yesterday about Jimmy Bloomfield's days at Leicester City, a time when it was widely considered that we played the most entertaining and attractive football in the country. As a mid 30's city fan I've had some of the best days of my life watching Leicester (7 trips to the twin towers in just 8 years was unimaginable as a kid growing up) as well as some all time lows, Swindon in '93 and Watford more recently to name just a couple. It certainly hasn't been boring being a city fan but I would love to experience us playing the sort of football that could be described as attractive and entertaining. We have played some nice football over the years but I would never describe it as a philosophy as it tends to be in brief spells during a game before we revert to type. I live in hope but in the meantime I would love to watch some extended footage of the Bloomfield days, especially the 4-0 FA Cup win over Luton (Feb, 1974) where "we played more like Barcelona that day than Barcelona themselves" according to Birch. I've seen some very brief clips on the Official History of Leicester City DVD but does anyone know where I might be able to find extended highlights or even full games from this era?
notnow john Posted 17 May 2013 Posted 17 May 2013 I was at the Luton game and whilst the passing of time does tend to burnish memories ,we were brilliant It was a team packed with talent ( apart from Birch) . Let me know if you find a copy I'd love to see it again.
The Guvnor Posted 17 May 2013 Posted 17 May 2013 Was privileged to have watched his team in the early seventies, we played some great football!!
DANGEROUS TIGER Posted 17 May 2013 Posted 17 May 2013 It was an are when this club had some great "characters" We have none now. Bloomfield's boys would hammer the side we have now, right out of sight.
wight88 Posted 17 May 2013 Posted 17 May 2013 Wasn't Bloomfield hounded out by sections of our loveable support in the end?
Kitchandro Posted 17 May 2013 Posted 17 May 2013 Another City team that underachieved. How England could do with players like that now, let alone Leicester.
DennisNedry Posted 17 May 2013 Posted 17 May 2013 The most impressive thing is that he was manager for 6 seasons. I doubt we'll ever have a manager last for that long again.
Pegosteve Posted 17 May 2013 Posted 17 May 2013 I´ve been following LCFC since 1967 and whilst we didn't win anything under Jimmy Bloomfield it was the best footballing City side I have seen.
l444ry Posted 17 May 2013 Posted 17 May 2013 Great days and great memories. It all seems so distant from the "modern" fans who are so content to put up with the crap served up by this current pile of nonentities and their mentor Nigel Pearson.
old koppite Posted 17 May 2013 Posted 17 May 2013 Another City team that underachieved. How England could do with players like that now, let alone Leicester.cheers kitch- that's made my week! That was my era when I was in my mid teens. I went every home game for 3 seasons and a lot of away games, including the semi against Liverpool and the reply. Great days. I didn't realize we took 8 thousand to luton-wow! The never walk alone with the scarfs is great. Funny to hear "you're not fit to wipe my..........."keith Weller -legend. RIP. Cheers mate.
davieG Posted 17 May 2013 Posted 17 May 2013 There's plenty of win at all costs who relish the concept of shite football provided it brings in 3 points entertainment is way down their list of requirements. Based on some of today's comments the guy was a failure and should have at least won a cup or two.
Weller in Tights Posted 17 May 2013 Posted 17 May 2013 I´ve been following LCFC since 1967 and whilst we didn't win anything under Jimmy Bloomfield it was the best footballing City side I have seen. You beat me by a year!! Got to agree, loved the O'Neil years, enjoyed the Little era for the Wembley visits, but the Bloomfield era was class. Can't remember which year ( might have been 74) but I remember one of the newspapers doing a poll and City were voted the most entertaining team. With players like Weller, Worthington and The Birch we were fantastic. Weller would regularly win goal of the month ( well it seemed like it) and even goal of the season. On a different note, sack Pearson, he is no Bloomfield!!!!
dedlock Posted 17 May 2013 Posted 17 May 2013 That was a good team. We finished mid table in the old 1st division. I was at all the cup games, other than Spurs home in 3rd round we were drawn away. BBC kept showing the Mullery goal for Fulham for years! The game against Luton was special but ,for me, QPR away in quarter final was the best game, two closely matched sides, good open football and 2 wonder goals from Joe Waters on debut. The luck of the draw was against us in semi final, having survived a bombardment at Old Trafford, we were undone by Liverpool in their pomp at the Villa Park replay. Happy days....and splendid passing football from City.

As a youngster I attended both legs at Old Trafford and Villa Park, I was absolutely devastated walking out of villa Park, in that respect somethings haven't ever changed.

I was at home listening to the replay on the radio. I left the room when Liverpool scored, thinking we were going to get whipped, only to hear my Dad scream out "Leicester have equalised!". I remember that clear as a bell. The third round game against Spurs was my first "live" match. Bloomfield's was a fantastic side to watch. Skilful and entertaining.
