Charnwood Norris Posted 31 December 2013 Posted 31 December 2013 Which team is stronger? We had Lampard, Gerrard, Rio, Terry, Sol Campbell, A.Cole, G Neville all in their primes in that 2006 squad and we only got to the quarters. Beckham was 31 in 2006 and a little past his peak but was still quality with his crossing. We probably won't see a better crosser for another 30-50 years. Gerrad, Lamps and Cole were better back then than what they are now in my opinion, yet those 3 oldies still look likely to go to Brazil. Although Cahill & Jagielka are decent and at their peaks, I don't think they are in the same class as peak Rio and Terry... or Campbell. Gary Neville had a better understanding defensivley than our current rightbacks, Walker and Gen Johnson, but these two guys are faster and more attacking. Joe Hart is miles better than Paul Robinson - our no.1 in 2006. Barkley, Townsend, Chamberlain look like decent players and are arguably better than some of the midfielders we had in 2006: Lennon, Downing, Joe Cole, Hargreaves, Jenas and a raw 17yo Walcott. Up front we had Owen and Rooney in 2006... and Crouch. Clearly Owen's best years were 1998 - 2002, so 2006 he was a bit past his best. Rooney was still young (20) but he has yet to better his performances at Euro 2004 in an internation competition. I donlt think he has improved that much since 2004, although he's having a good season this year. Sturridge has not been tested at world cup level yet, and Defoe looks like he's gonna struggle to make the squad unless he gets in the Spurs starting lineup and starts banging them in. Crouch has gone and Rick Lambert looks to have taken his big 'target man' mantle. I don't rate Wellbeck personally, he doesn't get enough goals. So what ja think? Better or worse?
Guest shearfox Posted 31 December 2013 Posted 31 December 2013 Rooney has also been injured in every tournament since 2004... and suspended in the last. He has improved massively , this season looks back to his best... A raw 17 year old Rooney would not be instrumental in must of Man U's wins this season
Stadt Posted 31 December 2013 Posted 31 December 2013 I think Rooney was actually better when he was more 'raw', he seemed more enthusiastic with an actual desire to produce something amazing but now it seems like he tries to be more 'cool' with his playing style.
Langston Posted 1 January 2014 Posted 1 January 2014 I donlt think he (Rooney) has improved that much since 2004 Excuse me?!
Kitchandro Posted 1 January 2014 Posted 1 January 2014 Excuse me?! I share you're surprise. He's gone backwards.
Langston Posted 1 January 2014 Posted 1 January 2014 I share you're surprise. He's gone backwards. Well his goalscoring stats in every single season since 2004 would suggest he has improved considering each one is better since bagging 9 in 40 in 03/4. He's not even playing up top consistently this season and has nigh on a one in two goalscoring record for one of the biggest clubs in world football and the season before last notched up 34 goals in 43 appearances. His style of play has changed, yes - but to say he's gone backwards is a staggeringly odd thing to say. It's become fashionable to knock our lot (and rightly so in a lot of cases) but I have to make an exemption on Rooney's part, I think he's brilliant.
Langston Posted 1 January 2014 Posted 1 January 2014 Regarding the current set up, I'd absolutely love to see a midfield three of Carrick, Barkley and Rooney behind a front three.

Why play rooney in midfield when he's our best striker? I'd play im in the hole, or Shadow Striker. thats his best role. Id play a diamond of Carrick (DM) Barkley (CM) Townseend (RM), Chamberlain (LM) and Gerrard (AM). If only we had a suarez or ibramhivic in front of Rooney instead of danny bloody wellbeck
Dan Posted 2 January 2014 Posted 2 January 2014 2006. I think Hodgson's done pretty well given our circumstances but I still think our future looks bleak. We're bringing through a lot of decent players but a lack of any genuine stars. Anyone who looks like possibly being a top player ends up being over hyped within a month as well which never helps in my opinion. I do like Barkley but what the hell is this £50mil talk of him? it's laughable.
The Blur Posted 2 January 2014 Posted 2 January 2014 I think Rooney was actually better when he was more 'raw', he seemed more enthusiastic with an actual desire to produce something amazing but now it seems like he tries to be more 'cool' with his playing style. I think it was wise for him to change his playing style- he can't keep up his aggressive playing style forever. It was easier when he was 17/18 but when you are a 27 years old it is not possible. It also helped his disciplinary record a lot as well. I do agree that he seem to have lost his love of football at times when he seem to be more interested in moaning than playing.

In an ideal world I'd go for: Hart Johnson Terry Cahill Cole Carrick Gerrard Barkley Rooney Walcott Lennon/A.Nother Sturridge Huddlestone is seriously pushing for a place on the plane at the minute, refreshing to see Aaron Lennon actually manage to string two games together, too. See Saido Berahino for that - great prospect by all accounts, but he bagged a penalty yesterday and the commentator yells "he's the real deal!" It's great we've actually got one or two genuine prospects coming out of our academies but as we've so often seen, our press love to build someone up to knock them down.
purpleronnie Posted 2 January 2014 Posted 2 January 2014 I can't think of a worse England squad for a long time.

Totally agreed re Berahino, he's often impressed me, mind. I do wonder what it's like in other countries for media. I doubt they'd be ideal but I couldn't picture them being as bad as ours.

Guest kristianity77 Posted 2 January 2014 Posted 2 January 2014 I think Englands team over the last 20 years or so has stayed pretty constant quality wise. The problem is is that every other nation is improving whilst we are standing still. The young players have style and skill booted out of them at a young age because thats the "English Way" and we are now just churning out players who are pretty much the same as the last. Until we change the way we see football, we will continue to get left further and further behind. England for me haven't looked like a good balanced side capable of beating the best since 1996.
Langston Posted 2 January 2014 Posted 2 January 2014 **** me I've had a nightmare with that, I thought I was onto something with my ingenious "two diamonds" formation
