GloverFox Posted 23 March 2014 Posted 23 March 2014 This is actually a tough one. I'd rather see LCFC win the FA Cup and have our name on that trophy forever than see us go down than see us stay up if I had to choose (this is obviously a hypothetical either/or question, so you can't choose both). Additionally, I do feel more strongly about LCFC than England but seeing England win the world cup would give the entire country a boost. Also, I would love to see England win the world cup before I die, so I'll have to go with the World Cup. ... Agree with you on both counts, not being on the FA cup cuts me every year ... But at least for me England have won the World Cup in my lifetime ... Still love to see it happen again though .... Yes, it's a tough call this one!
Manwell Pablo Posted 24 March 2014 Posted 24 March 2014 Not really, if finishing 17th next season led to long term stability in the prem like Southampton Or going down the next season anyway.
Manwell Pablo Posted 24 March 2014 Posted 24 March 2014 I broadly agree. I don't despise England - given the choice I'd have them win the tournament - and I agree that nationalism in general, rather than specifically English nationalism, is what I have a problem with. But as I'm English I tend to see a lot more English nationalism! Put simply, I'm uncomfortable with how patriotism tends to manifest itself, so over the years this has eaten away at my support for the national team. I'm not too keen on getting caught up in all the flag-waving and national anthems and people telling me how amazing it is to be English. It's not going to lead to World War Three but it can all get a bit ethnocentric at times. And you're right about club football - I've seen plenty of idiots there. If the degree to which we like our own fans were a key factor in supporting a club then I'd have fallen out with Leicester years ago! It's the wider issue of how dangerous the extremities of national pride can be that affects my apathy towards the England team, or any other national team. It goes beyond a few fights in the town centre after a local derby. But that's not to say that the bulk of English fans would become Anglo-supremacists the minute we qualified for the second round; nor that I want the team to do badly. I'm only justifying why I put club before country. Well fair enough, although I'd argue the anthems flags etc are more about togetherness than Nationalism. I think international football has mellowed well past the point of any viscous ethnocentrism, and again I think that's something other country's do much better than us as well, The German wrags go to town during the World Cup.
RonnieTodger Posted 24 March 2014 Posted 24 March 2014 England winning the World Cup all day long. What's so special about staying up? It's not like we'd never make it back in my lifetime. Here's a thought, what if it was Leicester to win the FA Cup against England winning the World Cup? I'd choose the FA Cup over the World Cup, definitely. But ending up about 15th-17th wouldn't be anywhere near as good as seeing England win the World Cup for me.
