How importantly do you rank a good cup run next season?

Dependent upon context...

If we do ok in the league AND have a good cup run (see Hull), then that's great. But I wouldn't want us to do a Wigan, win the cup and be relegated.

Prem survival is essential in the first season. Then we can look at our longer term aims. Anything else is a bonus IMO.

Cup runs can inspire good form but Sunderland's cup form hasn't helped them much, survival first season, FA cup the next.

Personally I wouldn't give two hoots about a cup run.

League is all that matters.

The counter argument is what are we all in football for? Making money? Survival? Or winning trophies?

We won't win the Premiership. But we COULD win the FA cup. And a couple of nice days out at Wembley would be super for all of us.

I suggest survival NEXT season, then see what we can do. Shows just how well Hull have done this season really. If they now survive (which looks very likely), their fans must be in 7th Heaven at present.

Don't the two things go together ? Now we are a PL side we should have a better squad and not looking to avoid a challenge. And if we don't compete why would we expect players to sign for us?

We should be looking at making a go at the cup every season.  With so many of the premier teams playing weaker sides nowadays there is a real opportunity to go far in the cup competitions if you play your strongest side and get a bit of luck. The idea that the first season in the pl we should just concentrate on the league so we can then 'consolidate' for the year after is daft as there will never be a season when we will be completely safe. The FA and league cups are the only trophies we are ever likely to win and we should treat it as such.

I think a realistic objective will be to finish next season as the Midlands' top placed club. This isn't something we've achieved very often in our history. In 37 years of supporting LCFC I don't remember it happening.

Next season the Midlands teams will be Stoke, WBA and Aston Villa, though the last 2 aren't technically safe yet, and possibly Derby if they come up in the play-offs.. I think finishing above that lot shouldn't be beyond us.

The cups used to be the highlights of the season for me but money talks now. You could win the League Cup and the FA Cup in the same season, but if you get relegated in the process you'll suffer a financial catastrophe.
