davieG Posted 14 April 2014 Posted 14 April 2014 Hull look like they are going to manage survival and a cup run. Personally in the absence of any chance of winning the league I'd love to get to Wembley and win the fa cup, we're one of a few clubs of our stature to have never won it, even Cov have.

Bert Posted 14 April 2014 Posted 14 April 2014 Would I sacrifice premier league status to win the FA Cup? Absolutely. To have our name on the oldest domestic cup in football would be fantastic. Some may not agree with me there, but I know there are plenty that will. Would I do so for the carling cup? Absolutely not. Don't get me wrong I'd be delighted if we could win the carling cup but not if it came at the expense of premier league. The FA Cup is a whole different kettle of fish though. If we could win the FA Cup and stay up, even better.

Xen Posted 14 April 2014 Posted 14 April 2014 For next season at least, survival is the priority. So long as we stay up, I wouldnt be too bothered by early cup exits. After the first season I'll be more expectant/hopeful of us earning some silverware in the cups. Obviously, both would be ideal!

Second season if we stay up it would be a good to see a cup run and maybe a european venture as a result
Guest MattP Posted 14 April 2014 Posted 14 April 2014 As important as anything. One of the greatest things about our last top flight visit was the cups, Wembley and European trips that came with it. I don't see the point in becoming one of these clubs that just tries to exist every season finishing somewhere in between 10th and 17th.
C-man Posted 14 April 2014 Posted 14 April 2014 Any cup win > PL survival. Surely this shouldn't even need debating. Having said that, I'd rather stay up than simply have 'a good cup run'. Getting to a semi or a Final and losing is as insignificant to history as those finishing 17th.
Fox92 Posted 14 April 2014 Posted 14 April 2014 I'd love to see us win any trophy, but especially the FA Cup, which is the trophy most football fans want deep down. I've just said in another thread we should be looking to replicate what Hull have done. They managed to get to the FA Cup final without playing one of the top sides, I think the only PL team they had to overcome was Sunderland. I rate cup runs very high, I think every manager should be the same. I felt for Villa fans after Lambert's comments, but that's football for you these days, people would rather see the club struggle to survival in the Premier League than win the greatest cup competition in the World because of the dominance of money.

So even though I'd be prouder of an FA Cup win than survival, I'd rather we stay up and keep Pearson long term because I think that will result in greater success than one cup win.

Posted 14 April 2014 Posted 14 April 2014 With promotion we will have 8 less games next season, we can afford to put full strength teams out in the cups without negatively impacting our season in terms of fitness and fixture congestion. The issue will be when we have a midweek FA cup quarter final replay sandwiched between 2 relegation 6 pointers, do we rest players for the cup to give us the best chance in the league?

Isle of Wight Fox 86 Posted 14 April 2014 Posted 14 April 2014 For me PL survival is most important. Winning a cup and going into Europe, but playing in the Championship is a real nightmare. Look at the likes of Wigan, having a congested fixture list and only since they were knocked out of Europe they have really come into some form. And plus everyone moans when our games get changed from the normal saturday afternoon 3pm to any other day (all be it due to Sky)

I was a bit too young to be visiting Madrid and Vienna in the pursuit of football last time around, so I'd be absolutely delighted to be able to follow Leicester into the deepest, darkest stretches of Norway or Hungary. Would I sacrifice that kind of thing for Premier League survival? Impossible to say, really. The way I see it is as long as we're in the Premier League, we'll be in a better position to win silverware and achieve European competition, so of course I'd prioritise staying up. But then I'd be missing out on those cup wins by sacrificing them, so it's a bit of a catch 22 scenario.

Would hate us to do what Southampton have done this season. In fact if Pearson decides to adopt the same approach as Pochettino every season (not that I think he will) I'll be wanting him out. If we're a decent side we ought to be trying to win things.
