Jordan Posted 19 July 2014 Posted 19 July 2014 Cormac McCarty, The Road 1984, George Orwell War of the Worlds, H.G. Wells The Road is excellent, but if I had to pick one McCarthy novel, it would definitely be Blood Meridian.
OzFox Posted 19 July 2014 Posted 19 July 2014 Like others have said, Bryson. Full of interesting facts and a good laugh to boot. Surprised to learn though that people still read books. I thought everyone just read the internet
Guest Posted 19 July 2014 Posted 19 July 2014 malazan series - erikson - that's 10 sorted there. really I'm quite shocked - I must've read 30 by age 3.
Finnegan Posted 19 July 2014 Posted 19 July 2014 Good luck with that one! After completing "Ulysses", which has the reputation of being a difficult book (but isn't), I thought that I'd move on to "Finnegan's Wake". I managed about 5 pages and gave up. Not sure I'd trust a man named Finnegan on this subject, anyway, unless he loved the book so much that he named himself after it... I think it's worth owning and attempting to read, even if you don't finish it, to be honest.
Steve_Guppy_Left_Foot Posted 19 July 2014 Posted 19 July 2014 The Road is excellent, but if I had to pick one McCarthy novel, it would definitely be Blood Meridian. I agree, but when someone starts a thread because they want to start reading I think they'd find BM a bit difficult, The Road on the other hand is about as concise a great novel as you can get.
Vacamion Posted 19 July 2014 Posted 19 July 2014 Before you hit 30, you need to know just what rotten pig-dogs human beings can be to each other: Man is Wolf to Man - Jaduzs Bardach The Gulag Archipelago - Alexandr Solzhenitsyn Alex Dolgun's Story - Alexander Dolgun If this is a man - Primo Levi The Long Walk - Slawomir Rawicz All of which give people nightmares and make them hesitate from complaining about 21st century problems... You're welcome.
Mike Oxlong Posted 19 July 2014 Posted 19 July 2014 John Kennedy Toole - A Confederacy of Dunces This is on my hit list but delayed by it not being available on Kindle. May have to dirty my hands with paper.
