The phone that is :)

Thanks to Heggsy et al and their cheap football shirts who have made Aliexpress the number one on my recently opened list, i have decided to try out one of the Chinese phones.

Ive had the Samsung S2 for a couple of years and its got a couple of small issues so i decided an "upgrade" was required.

found myself on the aliexpress site, searched mobiles and came up with the Doogee 500,  Couple of reasons for getting this model was, the dual sim card option so can use for work without needing another phone and it accepts a 64gb sd card, so all my music fits details/specs below if your interested oh and a 13mb camera.

received it yesterday and so far, pretty pleased with it good screen, smooth, fast and voice quality etc is all good. (lets see in a few months time)

Basically got it for $125 (about 70 quid?) delivered to Aust absolute bargain.

Just interested if anyone has tried the Chinese phones and any thoughts.. and thought it might help anyone looking for an elcheapo, if so... I used this to compare, was pretty useful

I looked at that one, looked pretty good but was a little pricier i think and i was being careful (read cheap)   :)

Ahh no, just realised that was only expandable to 32gb and i wanted the 64 otherwise looks the goods

I have a THL T200C, had it about 4 months and it's a million miles better than any other phone I've used before. Not had any problems with it at all.

2gb RAM, 16gb storage (upgradable), 6inch HD screen, 18MP camera, 8 core processor, NFC, Gorilla Glass, 27k Antutu scores, all that bullshit - cost me £170 delivered which I thought was a bargain… a week later they dropped it to £144!

Similar specced phones like the Galaxy Note 3 are about £500 off contract here, nuts to that. It's the same thing inside.

I used www.banggood.com who were brilliant, would definitely shop with them again. They've got a higher websafe rating than Amazon and eBay

True, the problem is most people have just seen the really bad budget iPhone/Galaxy knock-offs on Amazon (brands like Star) and assume all Chinese phones are like that. When I've shown people mine they can't believe it's a Chinese phone.

I'd never bother with another non-Chinese phone again

What's the internal memory like? Does it come with any pre-installed cr-apps that you can't uninstall.

My Sony Experia is nearly 3 years old now, probably time for an upgrade.

How does the dual-sim work, are they both active at the same time? Do you choose which one you use?

Internal memory depends on what phone you get, mine is 4gb internal and up to 64gb sd card

They sims are both active until one is in use.. (they cant both be going on a call at the same time, if you get my drift), so you can choose which you use for dial out or data etc.

Mine hasnt come with anything other than the normal Jellybean apps etc, (that im aware of, im sure its filled with chinese spying equipment designed to bring down the capitalist society, but then no different to apple there lol ) it came all set up in english and worked straight out of the box.

24 hours in, seems to be all good, had it close during a call once, so not sure iof that was the phone or coverage, but other than that. happy.

How do you choose which sim for data, for calls I presume you select the sim when you make a call, but how does it work for data, or can you set up a default, or if I have a Spanish and an English sim, then it will pick the sim for the country I'm in?

You can set up a default, or have it ask you every time you dial.

As for data, you choose default and turn on or off as required.

Im not sure about international..but its a pretty easy 2 steps to change your default sim.

what about apps? I would want whatsapp to use my personal sim & dialling to use my work - would that work?

Teh one ive got runs on Jellybean 4.2 and it runs all the usual android apps.

I dont know anything about whatsapp ..but i assume if it runs on android... it will run on this (ive never jailbroken a phone or anything, so dont know about that stuff)

lol just read about whatsapp, how far under a rock must i be living?  :dunno:

Ok a little feedback since the weekend.

Calling etc is all fine, tested the blutooth in the car and has been all good, wifi connecting all ok... but...

1) the phone sometimes turns off and on again when i open an app.

2) the GPS takes a little while to find location.

I have contacted the supplier re the "on and off" again thing as its a bit of a pain, waiting to hear from them.

At this point... i would be 50/50 on recommending, i think a new product should work at 100% and this seems a little dubious.

ok, im now down about a 30/70 for recomending getting one.

The turning off/on thing is getting more common.

the gps is verrry slow to locate

the google map navigation has my location as slightly off, which means it thinks im turning off the freeway each time i go past an exit.Being as i rely on the google maps this could be the deal breaker
