Hi there

First let me introduce myself I'm Steve and I contribute to the football stats site Soccerbase,

We currently trying to find out stats for seasons starting 92-93 too 95-96 and hit a bit of a brickwall regarding season 95-96.

Some books have been very helpfull but need your help on the following bits of info

subs v the following teams

A luton town 1-1

A Port Vale  2-0

A Norwich   1-0

A Sheff Utd  3-1

A Birmingham 2-2

A Portsmouth 1-2

A Reading    1-1

A Ipswich      2-4

So if you have some old programmes hanging around this info would help us alot

Thank you

Luton = Grayson and Lewis unused, Lowe on for Robins

Port Vale = Rolling and Robins unused McMahon on for Corica

Norwich = mcmahon and lewis unused (a sensible decision if you've ever seen them play) and Heskey on for Robins

Sheff Utd = carey, Lawrence and Robins all unused

Birmingham = joachim and Smith unused, Heskey on for Robins

Portsmouth = Blake unused, carey on for Hill, Robins on for Joachim

Reading = willis unused, lennon on for Lawrence (debut, the rest is history), Robins on for Heskey

Ipswich = Willis unused, lawrence for Taylor, Heskey for Lewis

See, I'm not just all bad puns and tomfoolery.

The number of unused subs back then was striking. Was it normal not to use more back then?

There was often a defender usually a centre back on the bench as a bit of an insurance policy in case of injury or reorganising after a sending off (especially if Walshy was in the team) but they would rarely get on. A bit like Waselewski this season (until WBA), it's still the case that whilst attacking players get changed to freshen things up or offer something different or defensive midfielders come on to see out a game you rarely sub your centre halves unless they're injured. Having said that in games where you're winning you'd think you'd give players a breather and others a run out and alternatively if you're drawing or losing you'd try something different so it's surprising there weren't at least two every game.
