A St Etienne story.

 

World Cup 1998. England get through the group stage and next up is Argentina in St Etienne. I'm following England round with my nephew, but we don't have tickets for the game. It's a small ground and England only have about 3,000 tickets. There are about 50,000 England fans in the country, so tickets are like gold dust. What could we do? I'd just bought this book about the history of French football, and so I rip out a page about a St Etienne Cup win, and stick it on a poster saying 'Two English St Etienne fans need tickets for England - Argentina'. We stand in the town hall square three days before the game and hold the poster up. About three hours later, a guy comes up and asks 250 quid for a pair of tickets. We don't have that much money, and we barter him down to 200. Most I'd ever paid for a ticket - until England-Argentina four years later...
