RedSoxUK Posted 1 February 2015 Posted 1 February 2015 In a league where set pieces are scored and conceded so often, how is it that we're still incapable of putting in consistent corners, and free-kicks to an acceptable Premier League level. I don't know who plans / picks our set pieces, or how long the lads spend practicing during training, but something obviously needs to be worked on . We need a player to step up and take corners every single time, and two free-kick takers for left / right. Mahrez being one of course. And drills / plans to alternate how we go about our set-pieces. Albrighton should be taking the corners when he's playing, I'm not sure why he hasn't been taking corners when dead ball plays were his specialty at Villa. It's worth having Albrighton in the team just because he can beat the first man, and increase our chances of reaching the goal. Watching Drinkwater's floated free-kick from the half-way line not even reach the box was laughable.
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 1 February 2015 Posted 1 February 2015 Deliveries are awful even from the overrated Cambiasso. Just no speed and direction which is what we miss. Maybe we also miss some bigger players which hopefully will improve on arrival of Huth. Is just like we didn't or don't even practice them
Jimmy Posted 1 February 2015 Posted 1 February 2015 considering Pearson's attention to detail wtf is he doing with set pieces in training, at both ends?
LCCFox96 Posted 1 February 2015 Posted 1 February 2015 We have been very poor from set pieces for a long time now. The amount of our corners that don't clear the first man is a joke. It is definitely one of the weaker strings to our bow.

It is definitely one of the weaker strings to our bow. I don't think it's even a string to our bow. As a fan it's very hard to know how good your coaching is or isn't, your successes and failures from set piece deliveries are one of the few instances where you can actually measure the quality of an aspect of your coaching. And our set pieces have been consistently bad since Pearson's return, even though our starting line-up has almost entirely altered. So what's the common denominator? It's just one of those of many, many things which needed desperately to get better if we wanted to be successful, and has been over-looked. To see so many players come into the side and take decent set pieces at first, then appear to have it coached out of them, is appalling. And I watched a game about two months ago with a guy who's currently working in top level football in Spain, and he said 'you do know that your players should be jostling for the ball before the set piece comes in, don't you? They just seem to wait.' If Stringer had been any good, he might have asked what is actually being done to improve on this.

Is just like we didn't or don't even practice them To be fair, I thought Cambiasso's free kick was the best of yesterday's game (from our point of view). Pretty sure it came in the build up to our goal. Agree with the rest though. They need pace, and directed flat so players don't have to use all their neck muscle. But I don't think certain players attack the ball well either, Morgan for instance always seems to get under the ball.
sdb Posted 1 February 2015 Posted 1 February 2015 James is alright. Huth hopefully will make a difference. But yeah we're bloody awful...still.
RedSoxUK Posted 1 February 2015 Author Posted 1 February 2015 Set pieces are not scored often in this league? Around 1/4 to a 3rd of all goals have been from set-pieces this season, higher stats this year - meaning they're very very important especially when you're struggles in the relegation zone. of our 21 goals, 1/7 have been from set pieces. http://www.whoscored.com/Regions/252/Tournaments/2/Seasons/4311/Stages/9155/TeamStatistics/England-Premier-League-2014-2015 According to this, the teams incapable of scoring from open play - Villa, West Brom, Sunderland, have been reasonably okay from set-pieces, Villa are lucky to be where they are! At least we CAN score from open play (joint 13th best,)

At least we CAN score from open play (joint 13th best,) We're 15th in the set piece scoring table with just 3 goals. Says it all. There are a few teams that really set up for set pieces but they're shit from open play. Only two teams have got over 10 goals from set pieces. They're not as important as you say they are. Besides, there have been a few goals that have come indirect from set pieces. Ulloa goals versus Spurs and Everton spring to mind. Count those and we're joint 11th in your table, which sums up that it's not a massive issue.
Soar Fox Posted 1 February 2015 Posted 1 February 2015 Knockaert is our best corner taker. Just a shame he doesn't get played enough.
RedSoxUK Posted 1 February 2015 Author Posted 1 February 2015 We're 15th in the set piece scoring table with just 3 goals. Says it all. Joint 15th or joint 19th however you look at it... With the exception of Man City and Liverpool, who clearly don't need it and to some extent Swansea, it's us, Hull City, and Aston Villa. And the difference between 3 goals from set-pieces and 7 like QPR or Sunderland is probably 4 goals worth 5 points. Set pieces are very important, and we're clearly not good enough at them. Ulloa vs Spurs was cup, the one vs Everton counts as a goal from set-piece play.
