Not sure if that liberal culture will survive much more in the age of the Internet and AI. All states need to be able to control the narrative to some extent.

We are very very tolerant in this country towards individuals and groups in media and the arts who are hostile to the British state and its interests. States hostile to Britain know this and exploit it.

In Britain at least I don't think you can understand the rise of populism in the form of e.g. Corbyn, Brexit or even Tommy Robinson without acknowledging our relative economic decline and diminishing global influence. In that sense I think there are many similarities between the UK and post Soviet Russia. And things will get worse I am sure.

I am contractually obliged to say Norfolk but apart from that, I discovered Gloucestershire last year and loved it. Nice scenery, good walks, good food and drink, some fantastic cathedrals and old monasteries around if that's your thing. I've also always wanted to explore the Welsh marches and if I drove I definitely would

North East I like. All Scottish accents are great. Lancastrian is ok. But Yorkshire... just no (apart from Sheffield which is acceptable)

The US is built that way though. Brits see their country as some kind of haven of social democracy and stability compared to America even when that is rapidly unraveling.

The important differences between UK and US are not cultural but economic. USA can survive Trump but a Reform government here would pretty much finish off a country that is rapidly resembling a failed state in many areas.

It won't be because Britain isn't America. It'll just be more of the decline of the last couple of decades, but even faster and deeper.
