Plenty of animals wouldn't have sympathy for their own species, does that mean cannibalism is okay? As Shrapnel pointed out when TPH raised this earlier, other animals follow their instincts in a way that we no longer do. We're far more evolved and surely as a result morality should play a part? When we've reached a stage where we can survive quite comfortably without killing animals for food, I don't see why morality shouldn't play a part in the decision, it does with everything else. --- On a relatively unrelated note, how many meat eaters are there on here, who wouldn't feel comfortable killing the animals they happily eat?
-
But you said you wanted a discussion about the morality of eating meat. Do you really think that having a digestive system that allows it, justifies doing it?
-
I'm not saying it's not important to some of them. But to say that it's of 'paramount' importance suggests that it's the most important thing to people who are providing meat by killing animals. If they cared more about the treatment of the animal than anything else, then would they really be killing them?
-
Why can't he say that? Murder is murder regardless of how it's done and for people (like me) who think that any other animal has as much right to life as a human does then killing it kindly isn't good enough. I also find it very difficult to believe you could find a single example of a place, where animals are killed (for food), with the treatment of the animals being 'paramount'. Making money is paramount to those people, if their biggest concern was looking after the animals then they wouldn't be killing them, it's as simple as that. Sure they may kill the animals humanely but it's ridiculous to think that treating animals properly is the purpose of these places.

I compare murdering humans and murdering animals, but that's not the justification for not eating meat. The justification is that I think it's wrong to kill any sentient being, which isn't an unreasonable belief. You might not agree with it, but surely we should all be free to post our opinions on an internet forum in a thread set up for people to do just that? I also don't think it's unfair to expect someone who has asked for a serious discussion about the morality of eating meat, to explain why it's morally okay to eat meat. I think it's fair to say that being capable of doing something is no moral justification for doing it. Who has been preaching? I was debating whether or not it's fine to eat meat, I was asking meat eaters to justify it. I'm not the one who felt the need to insult someone, nor am I trying to force anyone to stop eating meat, I'm just trying to get The Doctor to explain why he thinks it's reasonable to kill animals for food. I thought that this thread was set up to debate animal rights, but the majority of you clearly don't want a thread like that. You want a thread where you can post pictures of animal carcasses without having a proper debate about animal rights. Shame.

--- I'm not being a whiney little bitch and it's not my fault that you can't justify eating meat with any argument other than 'we're capable of doing it'. If you committed any crime and tried to justify it with 'I'm capable of it', they'd lock you up in an instant so when we're having a serious discussion about the morality of eating meat, the 'best reason' (as you put it) clearly isn't good enough. If it was, then you wouldn't be resorting to petty name calling would you?

Human beings can survive perfectly well without eating meat, as well as any meat eating human does, whether or not our bodies were built to do so really isn't relevant any more. Surely when we're capable of living without eating meat we shouldn't continue to do it because we're capable of doing it or because we're geared to do it. There needs to be a better reason than that.
-
That's proof that we can do it, not that we should do it. We can murder humans, but we shouldn't. We can eat humans, but we shouldn't. Being capable of it isn't a good enough reason to do it, it's just a lazy argument put forward by someone who likes eating meat but can't really justify it.
-
Is there? Because the argument put forward in this thread by meat eaters has basically boiled down to 'we've always done it' and 'they're tasty'. I don't think that's a particularly convincing argument, I certainly don't think it justifies the mass murder of creatures like you or I. Where as keeping animals as pets can offer clear benefits to both the person and the animal.
-
I honestly can't quite believe I just read that. I'm not saying keeping an animal is perfectly fine, but to imply that keeping an animal and killing an animal are remotely similar is just ****ing ridiculous. One can result in a perfectly content animal living for years, the other always results in the death of an innocent animal.

A 2000-2009 Music thread... is this more banter?

Couldn't we just have people monitor forums like this and pick out those who are less intelligent than pigs for consumption? Two birds with one stone, no more Dangerous Tiger/Lamby/Kingfox and if you branch out to Bentley's Roof then long-term food security should be assured.

This is going surprisingly well.

I thought you'd get a permanent ban after 10? This is a travesty.

I never want to see Marshall or Knockaert take a corner while James is on the pitch again.

I think we get that, it's been said (by you) 1,000 times in this thread. Generally accompanied by a picture of an animal carcass, I'm well aware of the fact that you like to eat dead animals.
-
We can quite comfortably survive without killing anything that moves in this day and age. I honestly don't think that when we don't need to do it, it's right to take the life of another animal, I don't think the fact that we can kill animals and that humans have done in the past is a good enough reason for someone to think that they have a right to cause suffering to another creature or to end an animals life.
-
Fair enough, I've never really looked into it all that much since I don't really care, I just saw it on another forum the other day. It's the whole unnecessarily killing animals thing I really have a problem with.
-
Why should I shut up about it? I think it's wrong. Feel free to ignore it, but if someone thinks that something is wrong then they've got every right to say so, if you think humans eating meat is fine then I don't see why you can't just ignore it.
-
I really think it should come down to whether you're fine with animals suffering or not. If you think animals shouldn't suffer then you shouldn't be supporting the cause of their suffering whether it's going to make a difference to the problem or not. If you're fine with animals suffering, like plenty on here are, then go ahead and eat meat and don't get too upset when people criticize you for it. But I really don't think you should be condemning the suffering of animals and at the same time financing it. Maybe you just don't mind animals being murdered all that much, you wouldn't be alone, but don't hide behind lame excuses like 'I can't make a difference' or 'nothing else tastes nice' because it's either not true or not relevant to your decision. The decision to eat meat should not be about whether or not you're making a difference, it should be about whether or not you're okay with animals being killed. Once you've decided whether or not you're fine with animals being killed, you can start to think about what you can do to make a difference, but it shouldn't be the reason for you doing something.
