One thing I’ve thought about since our mini slump (if you can call it that) is that since the Great Escape season we have periods of time where we’ve either been shit hot or shit, with very little in between.
Obviously think of the title season, and the years that followed where we were really good for large chunks of seasons (top at Christmas a few years ago?) and then awful at the business end. Last season we had one good patch before the World Cup, and we got relegated.
This season we’ve been brilliant - up to about 4 weeks ago where all of a sudden we look a shadow of how we started the season.
Now this may be a massive over reaction (particularly I think because last night can he attributed to too much rotation) given we are still 8 points clear of 3rd, and I fully expect to get slated for saying this, but do we have an underlying mentality issue in the group? I think we definitely have before this season, but is it still lingering?
I would like to think Enzo’s style centred on control will mean we will win more games than not, but I still can’t help but think the mentality issue might still be around? For example, when we got to 14 clear of 3rd, did a bit of complacency set in?
I hope not, and there’s a long way to go before any of what I have said has serious legs, but I’m scarred from previous experiences…
