Let's hope for no last minute surprises but I'm very happy with this. It's a bit of a risk but I think he's got something about him as coach from what I've seen.

Anyone else find that statement odd? Why would the players be specifically told that unless it was in the round of informing them who the new manager was likely to be?

I get why fans want a more proven manager, but what you also get with a proven manager is a catalogue of failures (unless you're a very attractive proposition) and repeat pattern behaviour of sticking with the same principles that got them the sack before. But going for a manager with minimal 1st team managerial experience is a punt that you're relying on high reward from high risk. The rewards though can be massive and as fans it's unlikely we truly know whether such a manager is destined to do so, where as a robust recruitment process from an effective sporting director and board should be able to tap in to that. There's plenty of examples either way of such appointments that go astonishingly well and utterly wrong but I see precious little evidence of better success rate going for the types of proven manager we could attract.

By that metric when Alonso went to Leverkusen it was like them having Lampard an'all.

I looked at him last season as his numbers were insane. Think the consensus is he's got a few imitations such as a lack of pace that might prevent him playing at the very highest level. I'll look again.

Also worth pointing out, he's been a coach for over 10 years. This is not a bloke who on the back of an extremely successful playing career has gone straight in to management at the highest level and is a complete unknown. He's been selected as assistant twice for the Dutch national team under Hiddink and Koeman and Ten Hag must have been ecstatic when he agreed to go to Utd last summer given his output as PSV manager is not to be sniffed at. He's a risk of course, we're looking at a scenario where we opt for a manager who progresses exponentially ala Alonso or at least Maresca to a lesser degree. But I like that idea over a perceived safe pair of hands which is comparable to the myth of Premier League experience as a player that often is no more of a guarantee of success and usually very costly in comparison.

Similar to Schmidt's the year before in winning their FA Cup and Charity Shield. Same league position but Schmidt did get 5 more points. RvN was fortunate to have Simons for a year but was mugged off with them selling Gakpo and Madueke and not appropriately replacing them. I think there's enough there to take a chance on him.

I wanted RvN or Corberan in the summer and it seems we were briefly interested in both but for some reason didn't go for them. Now we want them? Infuriating that we've wasted nearly a third of the season and brought players in neither may have wanted. Very very odd.

Be interesting to see Teddy Sharman-Lowe's career. Came up through our academy before he went to Burton. Now on loan at Doncaster from Chelsea.

Matias Almeyda Urs Fischer I'd love Sergio Conceicao or Niko Kovac but highly doubt either would come. Also very intrigued by what Jimmy Thelin is doing with Aberdeen.

Give it Gemma Collins till the end of the season.

Based on his work at PSV in their academy/reserve side and then getting them in a position to win 2 trophies before he left and then they went on to win the league the following season. It's underrated and probably why we'd be in with a chance of getting him. The sort of high risk high reward scenario. He's in my top three.

There's actually a very good selection of managers out of work currently.

We spoke to him in the summer didn't we? What he did at PSV should not be underestimated. A club like us is trying to get an extremely talented manager at the start of their careers who can quickly get results and possibly over achieve. It's the logical route if you are willing to take risks.

RvN did extremely well at PSV and I love that he'll take no shit from the club. He'll demand fast results and if the board are economical with the truth with him then he'll be off. I love that sort of integrity.

Should never have been appointed. Never felt right. It's not cause for celebration as a man has lost his job and wish him all the best elsewhere but he's way off being good enough at this level in my honest opinion. Surprised the board ha e acted, even though it absolutely is the right decision. I'm on the tins.

There's the credentials of a decent defender but he's got deficiencies that need a strong leader next to him and a far better coaching regime. For his size his aerial ability / reading of the game when the ball comes in needs a lot of work. I actually think his use of the ball is OK, he reminds me of Wes Morgan on the ball who could play in possession based systems or a more direct set up.

Will wait a while, if the football scene grows to the level twitter has/did then I'll move.
