  1. If this third strip is true I can't believe the insensitivity given the tragic helicopter crash and subsequent horrific fire.
  2. Norwich, as an old friend supports them, then WBA for the local derby and they were very unlucky at our place recently. As everyone has said anyone but Leeds.
  3. I tried to get Alan Ball to sign my players' autograph album outside the old Filbert Street Player's entrance in April 1964. He had just scored twice for Blackpool in their 3-2 win over City. He refused and got straight on the team bus. Later that Summer we were on holiday in Torquay and, quite by chance, met his dad in a pub garden and started talking to him. He was very friendly so I told him about his son refusing to sign, whereupon he asked for our address and 2 weeks later a signed A4 size photo of Ball came in the post together with an apologetic message!
  4. I never thought we would ever win a Premier League title but I always believed we had a chance of winning the FA Cup. The cup was very glamorous in years gone by and, Leicester, as a city was usually swept up in cup fever, especially in the 60's. I can remember joining long early morning queues around Raw Dykes Road which snaked all the way to the turnstiles at Filbert Street to buy cup tickets. The cup draw was always at lunchtime live on the radio and, as kids at Anstey Martin School, we would crowd round a pocket size transistor to listen to the draw. The magic is not quite the same but try telling that to Maidstone fans today.
  5. I voted for the third option: 45-54pts so City are doing better than I expected. I thought January/early February, because of Afcon calls, might be a difficult period to get through and this has now been made worse by: injuries, loan recall and a suspension, limiting our midfield and attacking options and options off the bench. We will get through this but I'm slightly worried that we are not ruthlessly finishing teams off when we are on top like v Ipswich on Monday. They looked poor first half and I can see how Leeds hit four goals against them. I would also hope that we can raise the noise level at home games and that some fans stay until the final whistle. As the visiting fans chanted on Monday night "Is there a fire drill?" I felt a bit embarrassed.
  6. Disappointing that Enzo didn't bring Mcateer on or even try Daka, whose pace might have stretched the Leeds central defenders. They enjoyed an easy night with our build up play very ponderous and predictable. We are really missing Ndidi's ability to win the ball higher up in the opponents half. We are also crying out for a left footed defender now that Doyle is out injured.
  7. Joe Waters is 70 today. He scored both goals, on debut, in City's 2-0 win at QPR in the FA Cup 6th round in 1974. I remember buying a ticket in the street outside the ground from a spiv for 15 shillings! I couldn't believe the City support when I finally got into Loftus Road: they had taken over the ground in their thousands. Great memories. Happy Birthday Joe!
  8. The support for the county was super, especially from all the City fans in the aptly named Fox Road stand. The chanting was pretty incessant and the roars accompanying the wonderful catches and spectacular run out were like those celebrating goals. Cheering every dot ball towards the end really put pressure on Hampshire. We all loved the chant "Harry Swindells he's one of our own" after his man of the match performance. Fantastic day!
  9. Great research once again Kushiro. Many of these City players names are familiar to me as my granddad told me all about them as this was his era of supporting the City from the Filbert Street end/Popular side corner. The best terrace view in the ground in his opinion. He also said that "Channie" would have won lots of caps had he played for a more fashionable club.
  10. Hardly surprising that the Telegraph or "Torygraph" puts a positive spin on Brexit.
  11. We need games against hard running lower league teams after a month of intensive pre season training/conditioning. It's going to be hard in the Championship let's not delude ourselves (reference Blackburn at home in the FA Cup!)
  12. I expect we will have to honour contractual arrangements but, due to the tournaments closeness to the start of the new season (Championship now and not PL which is a week later), I fear we could make a poor start. We need a tough pre season training schedule and matches against hard running lower league teams.
  13. I first fell under the City spell in 1963 as a nine year old and have been smitten ever since whatever the division/team/manager. Filbert Street was magical and raucous but quite a scary place for a young kid on the kop terrace when there were 42,000 inside!
  14. I remember the only way to get the latest or final scores was if someone had a small transistor radio and you would strain to listen. There used to be a chap selling Leicester Mercurys at the corner of the exit by the double decker who shouted "All the halves" (meaning the half time scores) but you already knew these as the half times had been posted on the alphabet plates on the wall surrounding the pitch. We used to get down to the local newsagents on Saturday teatimes to buy the Sports Mercury (fondly known as The Buff because of its yellowish colour), which had a match report of City's match by Billy King/Jimmy Martin. There was always a much bigger queue if the City had won!
  15. There is little or no chance of Pearson returning. He is well settled there and really likes the area (enjoying walking over the Mendip Hills). He spent 18 months sorting the place out as well. If we go down expect Bristol City to do better than us next season.
  16. City fans will be surprised how well Ashton Gate has been redeveloped since their last visit. The away end is now the Atyeo Stand. I can remember standing in the old south stand singing "2 nil in your garden shed" with a couple of thousand City fans after Matty Fryatt's goal in Holloway's first game as City manager and then wildly celebrating a Chris Wood first half hat trick in a 4-0 win some time later in the same stand. The new stand which has replaced it houses the home fans now and links really well with the new main Lansdown stand which is a very impressive structure and is very dominant and similar to the Carling Stand at the old Filbert Street. When City won the Premier League in 2016, Bristol City lit up their large wrap around advertising sign in blue congratulating us on our achievement. I used to live and work down there and it made me feel very proud.
  17. Great shirt! No sponsors name to spoil its clean simplicity and with the old iconic shield badge. This was the shirt I first set eyes on under the floodlights at Filbert Street in 1963. Davie Gibson was wonderfully balanced and very skilful and would have been easily able to play through the press in the modern game today. He always seemed to find space on the edge of the box to receive a throw out from Gordon Banks and he had a telepathic understanding with Mike Stringfellow down the left flank.
  18. Sadly I voted no, all hope is lost because we have not been fit all season, we can't defend and our midfield continually gets overrun.
  19. Watching the Newcastle v Arsenal match on Sunday I noticed a sign on the pitch side hoardings advertising a high energy, rehydrating drink. It said "Better Never Stops" and I thought we, as a club, right from the top to the players have stopped and become mired in complacency.
  20. RIP Willie. I remember him as a strong, tough tackling left full back who was very reliable. I think he was at City for two or three seasons after Richie Norman left to go to Peterborough United towards the end of his career and before David Nish established himself in the same position.
  21. My brother in law who is 64 and me 69 always join in with the singing. We sit in the kop end corner near the West stand. The atmosphere was much more hostile and raucous at Filbert Street (title winning year and some evening Champions League matches excepted). I think the supporter age profile was younger then and, arguably, more working class.
  22. I accept that Luke Thomas was dreadful last night and his recent limited performances have been poor but unrelenting criticism will do nothing for the lad. I can remember the terrible stick dished out to another local lad, Alan Woollet, back in the late sixties. Thomas couldn't get off the pitch quick enough last night when his number came up. Let's hope his confidence is not crushed as he has the potential to be a decent left sided player. Perhaps a loan out (if we stay up) and some intensive work in the gym to build up his strength?
  23. I think the City players must have had the wrong studs on their boots, nylon instead of rubber ones. You are right though, the game would have been postponed now. The kop end was especially treacherous as it was always in the shade from the high stand.
