When you say "worn off" you are only referring to the actual physical effects you perceive... how you do you know when it will have worn off to the extent it won't impair your reaction times. You don't, you are making an assumption.

The way people refer to news being "shoved down their necks" or similarly in another thread "homosexuality being rammed down our throats" as if to suggest they can't get through life by simply ignoring or rising above particular topics they claim not to be interested in.

Yes but the only reason you don't get ill is because you buy alcohol in a tightly regulated environment where you know exactly the strength and quality of what you put in your body...

Pretty facile argument. We've been getting off our heads for thousands of years and millions of people will continue to do so every week.

So full of common sense it hurts. I just hope someone listens.

Assume you know this but just in case you'll need to walk over London Bridge to Monument station to get on District Line (it doesn't run from London Bridge). Less than 10 mins walk.

Watched a few films recently with the only criteria being they need to be rated above 8 on IMDb which in my experience generally guarantees a good film and creates an opportunity to watch some classics we haven't seen yet. The Pianist (IMDb 8.5, me 9.0): amazing, powerful film. The scene where he plays for the German officer is unforgettable LA Confidential (IMDb 8.3, me 8.5): another corker, fantastic plot and proper characters One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest (IMDb 8.8, me 7.5): undeniably a classic and Nicholson is untouchable but didn't grab me in the same way as the two above Gladiator (IMDb 8.5, me 7.0): great entertainment but far too Hollywood for me. Felt generic and predictable Her (IMDb 8.1, me 8.0): thought their interpretation of the near future was brilliantly executed, thoroughly enjoyed it Interstellar (IMDb 9.0, me 6.5): best thing about it was the music score. Felt like it was trying to be both a sci-fi film and a film about personal relationships and didn't really do either one particularly well. Much more could have been done with the time lapse idea - Inception went to town with the dream concept and I thought it did it brilliantly. Fair play for the ambition in rendering time as a physical dimension though.

Holy shit.

Well yeah. Such a ridiculously short sighted and knee jerk decision to remove it. Firstly it's an original Banksy so is worth more than the entire GDP of Clacton on Sea and secondly because it's by Banksy it's always going to be satirical, ironic, whatever you want to call it, but the last thing it is would be racist. One misguided idiot complains and they remove it - what about all the rational people that wanted to admire some street art from one of the most famous artists in the world?

Pretty much everything about this story grinds my gears. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-essex-29446232 People... arrgghhh

That United one isn't a shit joke, it's just a fact. I was on the train back to London yesterday and it was full of them in their replica shirts and Australian accents.

It's a shame people need an opportunity to show off before they consider donating money (or more importantly time) to a charity. Not really a sustainable model is it?

No idea why I'm getting involved but... You claim not to have seen the figures yet make a statement as if you have - effectively committing the same crime you accuse MB of.

I never thought I'd move from Sennheiser but I tried the E10's and the difference was notable.

As an 11 year old girl it's very important for me to guard my anonymity, especially in this day and age.

Boomtown this weekend - hurray Horrific weather forecast - booo

Good value isn't it?! Pretty convenient times as well. I can only imagine no f**ker wants to go there so they're pretty much giving the flights away. Just need to convince the wife and we'll be off.

Friends living in Thailand trying to persuade us to go for a weekend away in Moscow at end of September. Sort of a we'll meet you half way type holiday. £70 return with Easyjet = massively tempting.

You can traverse Helvellyn going up Striding Edge and down Swirral Edge which is also fun. I did the route twice in a day when i was training for an Alps trip and had a great day out. Stayed in the youth hostel near Helvellyn. Such a beautiful part of the world, wish I lived closer.

Done 4 long haul flights recently and they are often the only times I bother to watch films: Prisoners 7/10: possibly half an hour too long but decent entertainment and surprisingly dark in places, enjoyed it Out of the Furnace 4/10: watched it on the basis that Christian Bale was the main character. Subsequently found out Ridley Scott and Leonardo Di Caprio were producers. Given those names I thought it was pretty disappointing. The Counselor 7/10: apart from all the "trying too hard to be clever by talking philosophically" bits I thought it was pretty good even though very little of the film made any sense. Lone Survivor 8/10: brutal and compelling The Hunger Games 2 6/10: good entertainment but basically left me feeling a bit cold. Struggle to care about any of the characters. Loved the books. Gravity 5/10: probably didn't help watching it on a small screen but though tit was massively overrated. Script was abysmal. Rush 9/10: absolutely brilliant, totally absorbing, fantastic acting and I wasn't even that familiar with the story which made it even more compelling Captain Phillips 8/10: find something about Tom Hanks intrinsically annoying but still thought it was a great film

When I first joined Facebook I was full of youthful innocence and made friends left right and centre with people that I vaguely remembered from primary school as well as numerous other incredibly tenuous connections. But then the realisation dawned on me that there was a good reason I hadn't been in touch with these people for about 20 years. It seemed all they did was take photos of their food and talk about their children. And then my Mum joined and things took a more sinister turn with me having to conduct a full audit of any photos posted, particularly after the weekend when there was a very tangible fear of being asked quesitons about why my eyes looked funny or what I was doing in a field at 6am on a Sunday morning. I didn't have the motivation to trawl through my friends and unfollow / delete all the gash, my thinking being that if I really am friends with people then I don't need Facebook to keep in touch with them. Needless to say nowadays I'm lonely and never get invited to anything.

I imagine they understand the concept of blocking and unfollowing but that doesn't mean this sort of behaviour won't continue to annoy them. I'm not even on Facebook anymore but I still find it annoying just reading it on here. The whole like this for charity thing is a massive bug bear of mine. Social media will ultimately ruin everything.

davieG's son right? A Google search of the name throws up a link stating his location as Norway which again supports the theory.

12 Years A Slave really does imprint itself on your mind which is why I considered it outstanding as that rarely happens with me and films. I think much of the impact is through the way in which certain scenes are drawn out almost painfully long. The bit where Solomon is hanging from the tree goes on for absolutely ages, I thought that scene was stunning... it wasn't brutal as such but it is something that will last long in the memory, and in my opinion was beautifully shot. (this drawn out approach was done in Hunger as well - the corridor cleaning scene sticks in the mind) For me it was the combination of the music score, the cinematography, some unforgettable scenes such as that above, a wonderfully understated performance from Ejiofor and great performances from others such as Fassbender that made it such a good film.
